Avignon versus St. Remy
We will be spending 4 nights in Provence in November (to be followed by 5 nights in Paris) and are trying to decide where to stay. We have narrowed it down to Avignon or St. Remy. Would appreciate any thoughts, including choices for hotels and alternative bases. Thanks

If you are renting a car, St Remy is ideal. Small enough to know your way around fast, cozy and practical, but large enough to have a variety of restauarants and stores to come "home" to.
If not, Avignon is perfect. Walk from the hotel to the central train & bus station for day trips. Type "Provence without a car" (between quote marks) in the search box for ideas.
Not to be contrarian, but Avignon is also convenient with a car. We stayed in Avignon for 10 days last September and rented a car for seven of those days.

Avignon is not a large city, more like a large town actually. They have convenient parking areas around the city and underneath the Palais area.

Driving is relatively simple, the city is surrounded bt a ring and you just follow the signs to head off to Luberon etc.

US

True Uncle Sam, Avignon is a large town, but very crowded. Also remember you were there for 10 days, Sammy (what a coincidence..) is going for only 4. If his hotel in Avignon does not have its own parking lot (many don't), he may end up wasting a lot of his 4 days with parking garages and getting in & out of town.

I would vote for St Remy. A small, charming town, easy in and out. Great location to see other areas of Provence. For more information e-mail me: [email protected]

I, too, vote for St Remy. I liked both, but Avignon had more of a tourist feel to it, more deliberate.
St Remy is just a nice old town that has some wonderful little shops and restaurants.
Avignon is also bigger, although once you get to the center of town the key spots are all pretty centrally located.

You'll enjoy either. Have fun.
