Walkinaround,
Even when I was first assigned to Deutschland in the 70's, the car was an important status symbol. Still there was a greater effort to conserve fuel & perhaps perserve culture by walking to the grocery store with your own basket or bag.
I hope that attitude is not lost as it is still one that I try to copy.
Regards, Gary

If you want to open it up on the Autobahn (anything over 200 kph) outside of Munich, here are a few tips:
Avoid the A-8 in both directions (directions Stuttgart and Salzburg), especially Stuttgart, since it's speed controlled @ 120 kph from 6 am to 8 pm, and is otherwise filled with cars, since the A-8 is the major artery from Western Europe to Italy and the East.
Take Garmisch Autobahn (A95) other than mornings & afternoons on the weekends, since it's then heavily traveled by Münchners headed to the mountains for hiking.
The A9 to the North is generally ok in mornings mid week, once you get north of the A92 (the turnoff for the airport).
The A9 is much safer at high speeds than the A95, because the former is straighter and has more lanes.
