a few ideas: When in Vienna, be sure to eat at a HUNGARIAN restaurant. the food is amazing. Just south of st Moritz is the suburb St Moritz Bad. Hotels here are not as pricey, and within walking distance of one of the major cable cars. In this area is an Italian Restaurant, Risorante Roberto, Via Tegiatscha 7, 7500 St. Moritz, Switzerland. Remember, you're right near the Italian border in St Mortiz. Italian food here is to die for. Swiss food is . . . well . . . it's OK.

@docdan: This is getting streamlined I guess.

Isn't there any train between Innsbruck (or Salzburg) and St. Moritz??

In order to minimize "staying destination" if we have to select one between Salzburg and Innsbruck, what woul that be??

docdan, to hijack the thread a bit, what Hungarian restaurant would you recommend? We live in Vienna and are always up for a delicious meal, no matter the cuisine.

I was in Vienna a zillion years ago and had wonderful Hungarian cuisine there at the tip of some German colleagues, but do not remember the name of the specific restaurant.

Train from Austria to St Moritz? short answer , no.
Trains between Austria and just about anywhere in Switzerland go through the rail junction of Sargans. So you are talking about a lot of rail transfers, which is cool if you have plenty of time and are an avid rail enthusiast, but a poor option with little ones. If Driving is not an option, then you may want to consider switching the SW city from St Mortiz to Lucern, plan on staying two nights in Lucern, with day trip Lucern to Engleberg and Mt Titlis cable car. Suggestion: I'd still stick with driving to ST Moritz, as you are time limited.

Salzburg vs. Innsbruck? the answer you get will depend on who has been where, both are fine ideas, however, there are more "cultural" and historic sites in Salzburg. That would be my suggestion.

@docdan: Great. Though I haven't driven on mountainous roads for the last 10-12 years but hope that Innsbruck (or Salzburg) to St. Moritz is broad and easy to drive upon.

"Easy" is a relative term. It is _doable_. Just take your time. It will be easier on your grou pthat trying to navigate a rail transfer. Both Innsbrook and st. Moritz are both along the same Inn river, so this is fine. Now . . . passing from ST Moritz to Italy through some of _those_ passes, . . . ah, that would be a different story.

0ne additional recommendation, once you cross the Switz/Aus border is the town of Scuol, and nearby is Tarasp Castle.

A true storybook castle your kids will enjoy. When we went the tour guide struggled with English some, but it was still very enjoyable. If you can walk around this area a bit, many of the farm houses have artesian wells that you can drink straight from the source. I'm not very fussy with bottled vs. filtered vs tap water concern, but I can attest that this was the very best water I have ever tasted.
