Austria / Bavaria in late Oct/Early Nov

Hi there. Wanting to visit Austria and due to my travel partner's (mom's) holiday placement, we can only go the last week of October/first week of November. I'm renting a car and we are driving, have the itinerary down, but my biggest question is about the weather. We are going to be able to squeeze in the cable car excursions before they close, but is this a good time to take in Austria? We are going to Hallstatt, Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck and the lower end of German Bavaria over two weeks. She could wait until retirement in a couple years and we could go in spring, but who knows if it will work out then with schedules, commitments, etc. However if the experts advise against we would change but I thought I would check. Thanks in advance!

You can always find reasons to wait. My advice is always to travel when you can because you don't know what else will happen that would prevent going two years from now.

The fall is a wonderful time to travel... the only thing I can think of is the school vacation in Germany called Herbstferien when there's about a week off from school; however, I've traveled during this time and it was fine... certainly no where near as bad as traveling during summer.

Have a great trip... remember there's more to the lake district than Hallstatt (not to discount that either.)

We did a last week of October first week of November trip to Austria and Bavaria not too long ago. We have taken many October trips to these also. I wouldn't worry at all. The fall foliage might surprise you, as it did us. I do remember being in Zell am See on Nov. 1 that trip. Not too much open, but we did have gorgeous, warm weather for walking around. Go. Enjoy.

The Nordkettenbahn may be open in Innsbruck. If so, take the trip!

Hello trophywife and Paul - thanks for the replies! They really helped. One of my items is to ride to the top of a mountain via Gondola and have a breath-taking outlook - and the Schafberg Cog Railway looks amazing! I know we have mountains in Alberta, but the railway up is just so neat (we don't have). We went to Ireland that time of year this past year, and it was lovely, but of course all the flowers of the palace gardens were gone, and mom made comments about that, but I said hey at least there aren't thousands of people here! Really the only place with the flowers would be the palace in Vienna... Also, with it being fall and such, and not too much open, does that include shops and such?

If it helps to answer the question, here are some of the places I hope to visit: Schafberg, Hallstatt, Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck/Tirol area, bottom end of Bavaria (and then back to Munich airport home)

Are you flying in to Munich, as well as out? If so, you might consider saving Vienna for another trip. There's a lot in the Tirol/Bavaria area without the long drive to Vienna.

Shops will mostly be open. Most things you'll be looking for will be open. Even at this time of year homes and building in general still have overflowing flower boxes.

The Nordkettenbahn trip in Innsbruck is closed from Nov. 2 to Nov. 18, 2017.

The Schafberg Railway closes Oct. 26, 2017.

The Achenseebahn (close to Innsbruck) trip closes Oct. 30, 2017.

The Rossfeld Panorama Road is a pay scenic "loop" drive above Berchtesgaden. Berchtesgaden is only 30 minutes drive from Salzburg.

This "luge ride" above Berchtesgaden is open until beginning of Nov., 2017.
