Augsburg, Is it worth spending the night?
Traveling on the Romantic Road, Would you rather stay a night in Augsburg or an extra night in the castle area? I am leaving in 24 hours and would appreciate your advise.

The "castle area" is really not that interesting. Augsburg (Augusta Vindelicum) was the capital of the roman province of raetica. The museums downtown and the Fuggerei are the biggest attractions.
It has become quite a busy place, but its much more interesting than those castles.

Unfortunately, Augsburg has not made it onto the Fodorite list of "most favored cities" so a lot of folks never hear about it (here) so they don't bother.
Augsburg is, IMO, very much worth a stop and at least a look around. It doesn't have a moat or anything like that but it is an interesting city depending, of course, upon your own particular interests and sensibilities.

For accommodation try the Best-Hotel Zeller on the main street through town, the Konigsbrunner St. Something like 89 Euros a night for a double.
Augsburg has strong connections with Mozart. There is a big Picasso exhibition on at the moment. And go and see the Fuggerei, a walled enclave within the city erected in medieval times by the miost famous of the Fugger family to accommodate the needier citizens of the town.

We stayed in Augsburg and really enjoyed it. We stayed at City Hotel Ost am Kö for 70 euro and was my husbands favorite hotel on that trip. We would go back. It would depend on where I was going next staying if (castle area) Schwangau or Hohenschwangau or Augsburg was best choice. There are also couple of small lakes near Schwangau and it is easy to get to Wieskirche and Garmish from Schwangau. We also stayed in Schwangau and stayed at Schwangauer Hof Hotel and could see castle at night.
