Reba, please don't let anyone intimidate you into asking not questions that you need answered in preparing for your trip. I understand why you have the impression that they perhaps dress "nicer" than we do here in the States. In the press we often see images of members of royalty(females) in their hats, gloves and suits. Prior to my first trip to England I thought that people there dressed like Americans did in the 1940's and 50's. People dressed more formally when they left their homes back then. I can assure you that they dress as we do. Maxie's advice on layering is excellent. I am returning in March and i will wear a raincoat with my clothes layered underneath. I do think it is important to make sure that what you take with you is appropriate to wear in the country you are visiting. I am visiting Italy for the first time in Sept. and from what i am reading on the boards i know that i will take very few shorts,if any. I will also make sure if i have a sleeveless top that i have something to cover my shoulders if i am somewhere where it is inappropriate to have uncovered shoulders. Enjoy your trip, England is great!

People in London have more style and less body, on the whole, than their US counterparts, the latter proven by statistics and numerous surveys. Watch any news report regarding an item of UK interest, and you will see people dressed casually, formally, any which way they like. London is not enveloped in a whole Ritz Bar atmosphere of formality, it's just another city, don't expect so much, you'll be disappointed.
