ATMs in the Hungarian Countryside

We will be visiting the Lake Tisza area, Eger, and also a small village in the mountains. Should I expect any difficulty finding ATMs or merchants who accept MC or Visa? Should we attempt to relearn a little Hungarian? My husband hasn't spoken it in 50 years.

Also, does anyone know any super attractions for a 2 year old on our route? Thank you.

We were there 2 yeara ago and never had a problem finding ATMs. Eger isn't exactly a small town without facilities.

It's possible that a small village in the mountains might not have an ATM. We went through several small villages in Germany and Austria last year that did not have an ATM. It just depends on how small the village is. So before you head off to a small village, get some extra cash. Many businesses, especially smaller ones, do not accept credit cards.

Hi:

I generally use the global ABM locator option on the VISA web site it shows ~8 in the Eger area & ~5 in the Tisza area (mostly via Budapest Bank), and have never had any problems using my Canadian ABM card at any that came up (of note - if you have multiple accounts on your ABM card, make sure the one you want to use is the 'primary' one & that your PIN in 4 digit numberic, that makes it easier to use everywhere).

We were in Budapest last month and there is one on the left wall at the baggage area of the airport (but make sure you have the conversions correct, I was going to take out ~$100us in Forints but had one to many 0's, first time I went to pay for something I handed over a big stack of 10,000ft notes & the clerk politely too the top 2 and handed me back the rest plus my change).

Enjoy the trip.

Z

With the possible exception of the smallest villages, ATMs are all over the place. Be sure to get enough cash to take you through each weekend. The ATMs are often closed on the weekend. Have a great trip.
