ATMs in Italy

It has been several years since I've been in Europe and banking technology has progressed; can one rely on ATMs in Venice, Florence, and Tuscany to get $$?; is it a good idea to still bring traveler's checks; all advice/suggestions most welcome--thanks!

You won't have any difficulties with cash dispensers
all over Europe, would it be in Venice or Florence, should you be the happy owner of a Visa or Mastercard credit card.
For Amex cards, you'll have to go to the Amex office, if there is one.
Bringing traveller's checks along is always a good idea.

I have used ATM's all over Europe. You will save money over Converting at banks or money changers because you'll get the best wholesale bank rate for the day. That's the same way credit cards work also. Just a couple of password tips:
1. Some machines can't read more than 4 characters. If you have more, get your password changed.
2. Not all ATM's will have alphnumeric keypads. So if your password is a word, remember it as a number. It's funny, I enter my password all the time without looking at the keys. But as soon as the letters were gone, I couldn't remember the sequence and lost my card in Izmir at midnite when I had to be at the airport at 6AM. Luckily some friends could float me enough to get to the airport by taxi.

I was in Italy in May, Lake Como and Tuscany, and I used the ATM as my only source of money exchange. I never had a problem. This is the only way to go as far as I'm concerned, you get a better rate of exchange, plus the machine is ready when you are. Each machine first asks which language to transact in, so there is no worry about not understanding what to do next. Have a great trip - Italy is a wonderful country!

Check with your bank before you go. See if your PIN will need to be activated for overseas transactions and which networks they belong to (Cirrus, Plus, etc). We tried ATM's in Venice, Florence and several other places unsuccessfully. I think our bank must not have been part of those networks. We were very surprised because we used ATM's a lot in France and they worked great. I would bring travelers checks as a back up.
