Athens - Must Eat!

Hey savvy Fodorites!

Question for everyone. I'm headed to Athens for a couple days next week and would like a couple restaurant recommendations. I've been there before, but was wondering if anyone had some hole-in-the-wall, unknown recommendations favorites. Mid-range Greek joints, great Souvlaki spots, favorite Tavernas, etc.

Personal Favoirte Gryo / Souvlaki spots:
Kostas
Savvas
Gyro Lunch

I'll be staying at the Athens Marriott South of the Fix metro stop, but would be open to any suggestions.

If you don't mind being the Exarchia area (avoid if there are protests!), you can try Lefka (121 Mavromikali), Rosalia or Yantes(both on Valtetsiou), and Cookou(Themistokleous) .

In Kolonaki, there is To Kiouri(it is in the basement), and Filipou

In Psirri, there are some nice places such as I Taverna Tou Psirri

There is a greek drink called "ouzo" which is very popular to the greek people. It is served with some very delicious traditional plates that I would suggest you to taste. There is a list with some ouzo serving places in Athens, including address and prices:

Ouzo..reminds me of my first trip to Athens almost 20 years ago on business. Many rounds of the tasty stuff served up at the "Alaska" in Kiffisia. It's too bad I couldn't recall the great place we went to dinner after that in Pireaus.....

If you want a neighborhood taverna, then I can suggest a Cretan Taverna near the Ag Ioannis metro stop. If you go to Ag Ionanis, leave by the Voulimentis St exit, go up the stairs to the top, walk along the side of the church by the newspaper kiosk, to the main street--Voulimentis. Cross the street and walk up Ainou Street--about three blocks. The taverna is on the corner of Menekratous and Ainou. Enter the front on Menekratous. Open 12-12, closed on Sundays. The street is very narrow but there is a sidewalk. The fellow who owns the taverna is Petro. He speaks fluent English (lived in Austrailia for 30 years) and Spanish (lived in Chile). He is charming and he will do everything possible to make your dinner enjoyable. It is a tiny place and most of his business is locals who come in for take out. We ordered two greek salads, two grilled meat platters, french fries, two appetizers---wayyyyy too much food for four people! We rented the house two doors down for a week so we had plenty of leftovers for another entire meal. Petro sent another round of drinks to the table, a round of ouzo, and a special dessert-- thick yogurt with cherries on one half and guava on the other. We were stuffed. Thank heavens we only had 20 feet to go home. I think you will be very pleased. I wish I could figure out how to include photos.
