Athens advice - where to stay
Here's the situation. I have a conference in Feb in Athens and will be put up in the Kolonika section of town for 4 nights. My husband and I would like to stay in Greece/Athens for a few more nights after the conference. Any suggestions on other neighborhoods to stay in? Towns to visit that would be easily accessible by train?
I'm not sure how much sightseeing I'll be able to do during the conference so my sightseeing time may be afterwards.

A nice idea would be to stay in the neighborhood of Psirri, which is very central and close to all the areas of sightseeing interest, such as the acropolis, the ancient market in Monastiraki, the picturesque area of Plaka etc. These are some places you can reach on foot from Psirri. Visit this site, it is a hotel that I personally adore and I hope you will like: http://www.hit360.com/ochreandbrown/en/
The hotel is very close to the train station and the underground.
As far as other towns that you want to visit by train, there is Chalkida, which is a town by the sea, less than 2 hours by train. You will enjoy a lot a daily excursion in Chalkida, eat at a traditional taverna and walk at its streets.

Check out the Attalos Hotel, it's a lot less expensive and located within easy walking distance to everything in central Athens. There's a nice rooftop lounge with an excellent view of the Acropolis.
