Astra Apt. and Cavo Tagoo
Has anyone been to these two hotels (Astra in Santorini and Cavo in Mykonos)? All the web-sites and guidebook reviews seem great but the customer reviews on-line have not been great and I am very worried (particularly about Cavo Tagoo). This is our honeymoon and I want a great experience and not worry about disappointments. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Also, is staying in Oia really better than Imerovigli? Also, will it be too cold to swim in October?

Marian:

Are you going this October? We are staying at both hotels you mentioned on our trip and are leaving on the Oct. 9th. I did a ton of research and am very comfortable with our Astra Apartments decision. As for the Cavo Tagoo - I have the same concerns you are having - but our travel agent is confident that we will love it as long as we have one of the larger rooms (she has requested specific rooms). And from everything I have read it will be fine to swim while we are there. I will post my opinions when we return. Good luck!

Suanne,

We just may run into each other! We depart Oct. 8th and first go to Mykonos, then Santorini, then Athens. I guess we'll see for ourselves how Cavo is! I have 2 couple friends who went for their honeymoon and both couples stayed at Astra so I think we're ok there. The rooms are nothing special for the price you pay but the view, breakfast on the terrace is suppose to be fantastic.
Sounds like you have a good travel agent.

Suanne,
We'll be there Oct. 12th and leave the 15th so unless we change hotels, we'll probably run into you at Astra. We're going to rent a car because according to our friends, it's more convenient to get around and Santorini is not so small. I just met someone who just came back from Greece and she knows of Cavo Tagoo and said not to worry, it's a good place particularly if the price is reasonable. However, I am having doubts about Astra now. One couple says absolutely it's the place to go. The other said they went because the other said to go but thought it wasn't worth the price and that there are so many hotels in the same area for cheaper and they advise to look around. At this point though, I'm so tired of all this research, I'm thinking of just keeping things as is. I'm envious you are going to Rhodes...if we had more time, I would have gone there too.

HI Marian/Suanne,

My boyfriend and I spent 3 weeks in Santorini and Mykonos in May of 2001. In Santorini, we stayed in Fira after much research on this board. Fira was wonderful and lively but for my honeymoon I would choose to stay in Oia. Oia was all that you've read. The beauty of this little area is intense. We looked at Perivolas when we were there and knew if we came back, we'd stay there.
We spent 5 nights at Cavo Tagoo on Myk and really loved it. You could probably find more luxurious accomodations on the island but Cavo was excellent for the price. The rooms are nicely furnished, large and all face the sea with beautiful views. The pool area is wonderful, food and service excellent. The only negative to Cavo was the road between it and the shoreline.

Just got back from Greece last Monday. I spent 3 days in Santorini and would highly recommend taking the bus over renting a car. Buses leave Fira and Oia every half hour throughout the day, and you can go pretty much any place on the island for less than 2 Euros within 30 minutes. The main bus station is in Fira so if you leave Oia you will need to transfer in Fira. Oia is about a 30 minute bus ride from Fira. The buses can get crowded, but it's a lot less stressful than dealing with those wacky Greek drivers. You also get to hold hands and check out the scenery vs. watching the road and navigating high above those towering cliffs. Greece has the highest fatality rate of any European county when it comes to driving, and the bus system in Santorini is excellent.
Just returned from two weeks in Greece. Spent 4 days in Oia. Loved it. Stayed at the Atlantis Villas in their junior suite and found the accommodations, view and service top notch. Definitely stay in Oia. It is the place to be for a very relaxing quiet time. Sunsets are fantastic.
