Assisi to Siena on Easter

We plan on being in Assisi until March 31st, 2002. We need to get to Siena on that day (Easter Sunday). Will bus or train transportation be a problem??

Well, ideally, it would be best to get some advice from someone who has actually done one orboth of the following:

1. traveled this actual route by train and/or

2. traveled in or around Umbira or Tuscany ON Easter Sunday

- - but you should know that this is one of those "you-can't-get-there-from-here" routes. Searching www.trenitalia.com you can see that it takes a minimum of two train changes and four hours (or more, especially if you route via Arezzo - - WAY out of the way!) - - when it is only 1.5 hrs by car.

Considering that you have to use a taxi to get to the train station at Assisi (it's "down the hill" in Santa Maria degli Angeli - - not IN Assisi), you might consider going ahead and paying for taxi or other shuttle all the way to Siena (78 miles), or at least to Chiusi (44 miles). Chiusi might look as if it as far out of the way as Arezzo, but it is at least a non-stop train ride from Siena. And be aware that you will probably have a certain trek (perhaps taxi ride also) from Siena train station to where you will be staying

As for the schedule ON Easter Sunday, I looked at the schedule for Christmas Day (2001), and it appears to have about half the number of choices when compared to a regular weekday (December 20, for example).

I don't know any good sources of info on bus transportation in Italy.

Best wishes,

Rex

Hi Stan

http://www.hotelmodernosiena.it/bus_line.htm

http://www.turismoverde.com/italia/trasport/bus2peru.htm

Bus is best from Siena to Assisi I think - these are two alternatives. You can see the timetable for festivi/public holidays.
Best is to take the bus. There are a couple of Freccia dell'Appennino buses that leave Santa Maria degli Angeli basilica (take a bus or taxi down the hill) around 10:20 am, arriving Siena at noon.

http://www.lazzi.it/senaautolinee/ascoli_siena.htm

http://www.lazzi.it/senaautolinee/foligno_siena.htm

Thanks for all the info. We will be in this area for ten days over Easter and are having a heck of a time figuring out where to stay since we will be depending on public transportation while there. We want to seee all the sights and are thinking of: 3 days in Orvieto, 3 days in Assisi, and 4 days in Siena. We would be going out from each of these to see other sights. It sounds like Assisi is not the place to use as a home base. Any ideas?

Thanks
