I had a very good dinner at Paradiso de la Terme just a short drive outside the Porta Nuova Gate.

Last August we had dinner in Assisi at Trattoria dei Consoli in the Piazza Commune. I had grilled sausage, polenta and asparagus; my husband the mixed grill. I know it seems somewhat simple but there's just something the Italians do to grilled meat that make them very memorable. The restaurant is located on the second floor with a terrace overlooking the piazza. (If you're walking up hill towards the fountain, away from the temple of Minerva, you'll pass a series of stores, then an alleyway on your left, almost directly across from the fountain. The entrance to the restaurant is in the alley.)

For something special and in driving distance, La Bastiglia.
