Asissi and Tuscany

I have just traded for a time share in Asissi in July (and yes, I have heard it will be hot). I have never travelled in Europe, and wanted to tour Tuscany until this trade came up. I'm looking for some advice....How doable is the Tuscany region from Asissi? What are "must see's" in the area? And any other advice you have would be most welcome.

Much of classic Tuscany may be too far---more than 2 hours driving. However, some prime exceptions would include Cortona, Montepulciano, and even Siena. Look at the route along the lake to Chiusi and then S-146 as far as Pienza.

Focus instead on Umbria (which is where you'll be).

There are many "must see's" in Umbria - it's comparable to Tuscany...

You can get to Orvieto fairly quickly, and it is a very pretty and fascinating town. You can spend a lovely day there. It's up on a high hill, and you can park at the bottom and take a funicular up. There's a fascinating deep well next to the funicular stop that goes all the way down to the bottom of the hill with an ornate double helix staircase (two circular staircases that don't intersect) that you can look out from and see the other one. The well was built hundreds of years ago to supply water during a siege.

There are many caves cut into the rock on top, and several restaurants are located in caves. The cathedral (Duomo) is gorgeous and contains some stunning frescoes. The local wine, Orvieto Classico, is a light and tasty white. The view of the countryside is stunning.

Just wanted to say, since you are sounding a bit uncertain about Assisi - I've been doing lots of research on it recently as we are going as part of next year's trip, and it sounds really special. We were originally only going to stop for 1 night, now stopping for 2 and considering more... I've been to Italy 17 times before but I am particularly looking forward to Assisi, after all I've read about it.

Consider also day trips to Urbino, Arrezzo and to the seaside at Rimini.

Hi Mlemansk - Assisi is one of my favourite towns in Italy. I'm sure you won't be disappointed

Perugia, Cortona, Spoleto, Gubbio and Todi are all well worth visiting - and not too far.

You might find this link useful for planning your sightseeing in bella Umbria:

Hope this helps ...
