An older and very wierd movie---Julia and Julia, starring Kathleen Turner and Gabriel Byrne. Done in Trieste.

Hi altajoe, I also love the book, "Under the Tuscan Sun", unfortunately the movie is nothing like it. Why don't they just call films something different, when they want to tell a different kind of story?I also have "Bella Tuscany" by Frances Mayes.I am determined to spend some time in Tuscany this coming fall!

Tedgale. I had forgotten about "A Bicycle Thief". My father also thought that was one of the best movie ever made.

I will have to see if I can rent this. Is it out on DVD?

I'm one of the few (maybe the only one) who like the movie "Under the Tuscan Sun" more than the book. Well, my wife was another.

You're getting great suggestions; I though my kids were too young for Gladiator when we took them to Italy so we watched Ben Hur!! I agree about Quo Vadis, too. English Patient is good but I don't think that's for kids. We stayed near the site of the patient's recovery and saw the castle many times. There's a cute book (you didn't mention the ages of your kids) about Melanie Martin, a girl going to Italy with her younger brother. Very funny.

Facing Windows ( La Finestra di Fronte) is a good movie but it is not exactly family oriented. Currently it is offered on Comcast On Demand.

Oh yes, undehil, The Leopard.
There's a picture today in the NYTimes Showing the gorgeous Alain Delon with Claudia Cardinale. But Please, read the book.
Burt Lancaster starred in this film, playing the Sicilian Nobleman.
Believeit or not

Oh, you want raw-meat Roman violence? Spartacus is right up there with Gladiator. Plus, it has the crucifixion scene where 6,000 of the rebels decorated the Appian Way.

Not family-friendly I guess, and so I won't recommend it to Chris9, but 'Rocco e i suoi Fratelli' ('Rocco and his Brothers'), made in 1960, is a good antidote to the sugary romantic view of Italy portrayed in movies like 'Under the Tuscan Sun'. Raw stuff, great movie.

My favorite is a little known film starring Dustin Hoffman called, "Alfredo, Alfredo." The reviews are not good but if you keep an open mind you may find it very entertaining.

grandmere - LOL at your observations of "Rome Adventure" and the dress style of the 60's! Everytime I watch it, I marvel at them sight-seeing in dresses, high heels and suit & tie!

Reminds me of the difference in the way I dress now for a plane trip as opposed to the way I dressed 30 years ago! And no, I don't dress in sweats or sloppy clothes now - just much more casual than I did then.

The PBS series "Inside the Tuscan Hills" is available on Amazon.com, just search for it there. I bought it and thought it was a great guide to the area. The reviewers there also seem to agree.

What, no Bertolucci? "The Conformist" or "1900" , both indelible portaits of Italy. And certainly 'The Bicycle Thief" "La Strada", "8 1/2" "La Dolce Vita" . . . but my Italian boyfriend always said that Ermmanno Olmi has the truest understanding of Italian life - "The Tree of the Wooden Clogs"
