As Europeans see us

Monday night on PBS, 10-11 p.m. EDT, "The Anti-Americans" is being broadcast. Could be worth watching.

Sounds like another opportunity to entrench the prejudices. As if we didn't have enough of those already.

As a European, I just want to say that we may not be as prejudiced to Americans as the media may want you to believe. There is a big difference in disagreeing with the current policies of the current Bush administration and the policies of the US and being Anti-American.

Funny that you never see anybody interested in talking about how Americans view Europeans. Could it be because the Europeans couldn't care less about how we see them or what we think of them?

Good for them, maybe we should follow their playbook and not care how they see us.

I think Vimsen hits the nail on the head.

I've always found Americans to be extremely polite, cheerful and helpful when Ive visited the USA

I think us Brits (as a nation) have so many people who dislike them its water off a duck's back now lol

Hardly seems worth the energy of turning on the TV. Why not just stay here and read the comments on Fodors?

To point out he obvious, there is no such thing as "European" nation.
How some French see Americans may be very different from a perception in Czech Republic, or Sweden from Portugal, Croatia from Germany ..etc.

"Sounds like another opportunity to entrench the prejudices"

Isn't that a classic example of prejudice?

We see them as plain old tourists when they visit Europe.

Politically, we were hoping for more demonstrations against Bush's Iraq war. Since when have Americans become so docile?

There is a baseball game on ESPN at that time. Being Pro-American it is my duty to watch the game. Public BS TV is generally a waste of time and this will probably be one more example of public money going to waste.

Prejudices about the prejudiced Europeans. I may be wrong, but it surely sounds so.

Yes, there are some anti-American prejudices in Europe, and one can see quite pronounced anti-European (or Anto-German, anti-French...) prejudices in USA too. If playing up these prejudices will gain viewers for a TV station, they will cheerfully pour oil in the fire.

Flanner, if you think I am prejudiced, you are right - agianst cheap shots in TV.

Few Americans know how many countries are in 'Europe', much less anything about them. Few Europeans know anything about North or South America. I have long been aware that European immigrants to the USA quickly assimilate and cut all ties to the homeland. I also note that very few WWII soldiers ever re-visited Europe. Most Americans/Europeans are too busy in their own country to travel. And few have time to be anti-anything. The 'hubris' as such is created by media sensationalists.

They say that Americans are from Mars and Europeans are from Venus, but the story is a lot more complicated. The Anti-Americans is a whimsical yet serious look at the estrangement between Europeans and America that has developed over the last few years. The program travels to Ireland, France, Poland, and Great Britain to examine the idea that each country responds to American culture and society in its own unique way, based on its own cultural needs, history, and prejudices.

The Anti-Americans is part of PBS’ America At A Crossroads series, funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

There are people born in America of parents born in America who count themselves as Irish. Some of them hold anti-British prejudices that are scary.
