See if this helps. I prefer the land bus so I can ride the Grand Canal to my hotel--you will want that anyway. And, the boat dock is a good hike.
Venice airport to your hotel—OR REVERSE
There are essentially two ways to get to Venice from the airport—land and water. There are two bus lines. The express bus, a BLUE ATVO bus which departs from in front of the airport and drops you in PIAZZALE ROMA in about 20 minutes. The other bus is an ORANGE ACTV bus which has more stops and takes 25-30 minutes. It is run by the same company that runs the vaporetto line so if you BUY A PASS at the airport for your stay in Venice you can use it on this bus. From Piazzale Roma you walk a short distance to the vaporetto stop on the Grand Canal get on the #1 or #2 VAPORETTO to the stop closest to your hotel. The #1 line has more stops.
On the water side there are also 2 choices. A private WATER TAXI, which is really a lovely shiny mahogany hulled craft that will take 6 or more with luggage and make you feel like James Bond. But, that will cost you from 60 to 100E depending on your destination. You can also take the public water bus, ALILAGUNA. It's a larger boat that makes a couple of stops before getting to the main stop at San Marco. It will cost 12 euros per person and takes about 1:20.
Both water options are located about 10-15 minute walk from the main terminal to the docks. Tickets for ALILAGUNA and the buses are purchased in the arrivals terminal. There is also a bus that will take you to the docks in front of the terminal. To me, it is magical to enter Venice from the water. If the weather is good, try to make a friend at baggage claim and share the cost of the private water taxi directly to your hotel.
THE REVERSE TRIP---TO THE AIRPORT:
Your hotel location may well dictate your best option. The ALILAGUNA line departs from near San Marco[ Giardinetti stop] and is a large water bus to the boat dock near the airport terminal—but you still must walk about 500 meters. See above.
The VENICE EXPRESS is a new bus service to/from Piazzale Roma that runs every :20 and only costs 3E. It is a large blue bus that allows your luggage to fit in the bus belly. The trip takes about :30 and drops you in front of the terminal—all very easy once you get to Piazzale Roma and find the bus.
Of course, you can always live large and hire the private water taxi from your hotel to the boat dock at VCE. The cost will be up to 100E depending on location. You may get lucky and be able to share that cost with other hotel guests making the same trip.
THE BEST ADVICE IS TO ASK THE HOTEL—THEY DO THIS EVERYDAY.

There are several ways to get there depending on your budget/convenience equilibrium.
Water taxi is fastest, comfortable, but expensive. If "we" is a large number, this is not a bad choice.
Alilaguna water bus is convenient, takes longer, about 70min, and €13.
ATVO land bus to Piazzale Roma €3, then ACTV boat €6.50 or get a multi-day pass and start using on arrival.
