Arles -paper mill

Thanks for all the usefull information that I have found in this chat room. I have a question about Arles. In one of the travel books it said that there is a paper mill outside of Arles and that the stink drifts over to the old section. We were thinking of staying at the Hotel d'Arlatan and was wondering if we would be blasted out by the paper mill smell. Is it true that the town of Arles has this paper mill smell? Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I've stayed at the d'Arlatan and walked through town and never noticed any odor; unless the mill is new?

Hi Deborah. For what it's worth, I stayed in the old part of Arles in the fall of 1999 for two nights and didn't notice anything like this.

In May of 2001, we too stayed in "old" Arles at the Calendal (right next door to the Roman arena)and never noticed any unpleasant odors. Which travel book noted the paper mill?

j

We stayed at the Hotel D'Arlatan in June
2001--no odor detected. Wonderful hotel choice, by the way. Enclosed garage right next to hotel if you have a car-very convenient. Laundromat within walking distance, too, if it's time for that. We loved Arles--a great walking city.

Deborah,

There IS a cellulose plant between Arles and Tarascon. And on some days, it reeks.... we can actually get the smell where I live near Les Baux (rare, but it happens). It's almost always when there has been some rain and a light wind is blowing from the west. No smell when there is a Mistral. And usually no problems with smell during the summer months.

A Canadian company has purchased the plant, and they've promised to put a complete filtration system in by 2003.... here's hoping !

PB

Topping for Deborah who, apparently, couldn't find these answers.

Thank you for the information about Arles. The travel book that mentioned the paper mill is called Provence by Facaros and Pauls - a Cardogan guide.
