Arles -paper mill
Thanks for all the usefull information that I have found in this chat room. I have a question about Arles. In one of the travel books it said that there is a paper mill outside of Arles and that the stink drifts over to the old section. We were thinking of staying at the Hotel d'Arlatan and was wondering if we would be blasted out by the paper mill smell. Is it true that the town of Arles has this paper mill smell? Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

We stayed at the Hotel D'Arlatan in June
2001--no odor detected. Wonderful hotel choice, by the way. Enclosed garage right next to hotel if you have a car-very convenient. Laundromat within walking distance, too, if it's time for that. We loved Arles--a great walking city.

Deborah,

There IS a cellulose plant between Arles and Tarascon. And on some days, it reeks.... we can actually get the smell where I live near Les Baux (rare, but it happens). It's almost always when there has been some rain and a light wind is blowing from the west. No smell when there is a Mistral. And usually no problems with smell during the summer months.

A Canadian company has purchased the plant, and they've promised to put a complete filtration system in by 2003.... here's hoping !

PB
