sillgranma,
There is the Cave of La Pileta in Benoajan, 25 km. southwest of Ronda in the serrania. This could be a day trip from Torremolinos. The caves were discovered in 1905 and are a mile long, filled with stalagmites/stalactites and prehistoric paintings of animals.
The caves are open for guided tours, given by the family of the owners, from 10-1 and 4-5.

Maribel - you should be anointed by all Fodor Spain travelers! Such a wealth of knowledge and willingness to share. I'm in awe.
Follow-up questions: Tour I'm traveling with provides one free day from Torremolinos base. How do I get to Benoajan and the Cave of La Pileta? Is it open daily?
Thanks again for your continuous flow of information.

hi sillygranma,
The best way is to drive. Have you considered renting a car for the day? The drive up takes 1 hr. from Marbella, so add on 15-20 min. east on the Autopista del Sol
(toll road) to Torremolinos.
This drive is a spectacular one, BTW.
If you can make it up to Ronda on a bus from the coast (and yes, there are public busses-I think the bus co. is Portillo), you could arrange a taxi service from Ronda to the caves and back. Tour lasts 1 hr.

sillygranma,
There are 7 daily busses from Marbella and San Pedro de Alcántara to Ronda (bus trip takes 1 1/2 hrs.). Then you could hire a taxi to take you to and fro caves outside of Benaoján, but the Rough Guide '03 says that a round trip taxi fare with waiting time would run 43 euros.
Again the best way to enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Serranía de Ronda is by car. It's one heck of a drive.
The cave paintings, etchings in charcoal, red and yellow ochres are Paleolithic, of animals, fish and so they say, magic symbols. They say the earliest red paintings, from 25,000 B.C. predate Altamira. But your tour may be only in Spanish or with just a bit of English thrown in. But lots of bats and no artificial lighting so tour participants carry lanters with them.
And obvisouly no photography is allowed insdie the caves. And dress very warmly! And each tour is limited to a max of 25 persons. Groups of larger than 4 should book ahead at 95 216 73 43. Also the final group tour in afternoon leaves at 6 now. Cost, 6,50
The brand new, hot of the press Rough Guide Andalucía says that "Turismo Alternativo" based in Ronda has a half-day organized guided tour for small groups by Land Rover which includes the cave visit. It costs 20 euros p.p.
Turismo Alternativo, Calle Dr. Fleming 56
phone: 95 287 55 56
Hope this helps.
