Appropriate Dress for Evensong
While in York, and perhaps at St. Paul's as well, we would like to attend Evensong. What is the appropriate dress for men and women? (We are "touristy" Americans and I suspect they are a bit more formal than we are!)

Thanks a bunch for the help!

You needn't worry about your dress for attending services in England. Whatever you wear for sightseeing will be more than appropriate. There will be a verger or steward at the door who will ask if you are attending a service, just smile and say yes and you will be admitted without any question. English people only dress up for weddings or baptisms, and today in our church on Easter Sunday we had people in most casual wear, with lots of teenagers and children. The older generation tend to be a bit more formal, but that's how they dress normally and there will be no problem if you came in without jacket/tie/skirt/dress etc.
Enjoy your visit to York and St Paul's. I was a cantor at York for a big celebration some years ago, and I was ordained at St Paul's 23 years ago.

Alexander writes with great knowlege and sense. Neither God nor man care what you wear: both welcome you at worship. I'm afraid I write as only a churchwarden -- but our special duty is to be sure the stewards make all visitors welcome.

Ben Haines, of London, in Chisinau
