From your posts, I can tell you are relatively new to Fodors.

People here are encouraged to provide feedback ("reviews&quot by writing trip reports. If a report seems too lengthy for you or others, you can simply ignore it. That's the beauty of Fodor's -- no one is forced to read anything.

I am a very seasoned traveler and I still rely and will probably always rely on the information written on this forum, the lenghtier the better. We save our pennies and count the days all year until our next vacation and we want to gather the most information possible to make it the best it can be. I can't say how valuable the "lengthy" trip reports have been in my research and I certainly hope they get MORE lengthy and have MORE detail! BRAVO FODORITES!

"Lets Us accept that we are individuals with different tastes, cultures, likes or dislikes."

Exactly, kismetchimara, which is why so many people are saying it is silly for one poster to suggest how long or how short and how detailed all other poster's trip reports are. In a sense she was suggesting that all trip reports should be limited to match her personal likes.

Challicewell is not new to Fodors. S/he speaks of this unwritten "rule" or "protocol" of labeling a thread as "long". When was that instituted? Not recently! While I haven't been here as long as others (only 2 years), I don't recall seeing a thread with such a request...

You are so right Giulia..It never cease to amaze me how much I have learned during all these years that I have been Fodor's member.

Before I started coming to this Forum, I was never loyal to any airline and never signed up for FFMiles..and never knew the advantage of being loyal to one or two airlines so that I could accumulate the milages for a free ticket to Europe.

Anyway August 28th I will be landing to my beautiful native city: Roma..I had enough FFMiles for a free Business class with AA.
Thanks, Grazie to all the knowledgeable posters!!

Out of curiousity, what is the "proper" length for a trip report? What is the line between too wordy and just right?

I think that when people are hanging on the edge of their keyboards, begging for more installments of a trip report, it is just the right length--whatever it is.

I think we need all the posts we can get these days on any travel subject people feel like writing about or care to share. When "what to wear" questions garner 100+ replies is not the time to limit any kind of actual trip reports imo.

Yes, that's true, betty, but that does not mean Challicewell is new. Trust me on this one.

But, Seetheworld, how are WE to know that?????? I've been posting here for over 3 years and you can tell that by going back to the beginning of my posts.

Challicewell's words..."However there was once a polite protocol to let people know that the review was lengthy by posting a "long review" warning."

When did this polite protocol begin? Not since 6/14. Challicewell has been posting since 6/14/06 (at least with this screen name), but s/he has been around much longer. I've noticed the word "long" in many a thread title which probably was a heated topic long before I came here. That's my thinking.
