Apartments in Rome, Italy

I am looking for recommendations for an apartment /airbnb style accommodations for a party of 5. We are traveling with 2 adults and 3 teenagers. One teenager will be attending college for one month in the Trastevere area. We plan to meet up with her at the end and would like to explore a new neighborhood. Looking for suggestions! Thanks in advance

Check out www.sleepinitaly.com. You can search by area, and I think by number of bedrooms.

We always try airbnb first. There are many apartments in Trastevere, which we prefer, and Testaccio which was a bit more local and not as polished but had some good restaurants. The last time there, we rented a 3BR airbnb across the street from a university near the Termini station. There were seven of us in a nice and spacious apartment for about $130 as we recall.

I agree with whitehall's suggestion of Testaccio. My last Airbnb apartment was on Via Amerigo Vespucci & I found the neighborhood pleasant and well-located to get around, both walking and the #3 tram runs along Via Marmorata, very convenient. It isn't an area one would routinely go but I think that's a good thing, friendly locals' restaurants & cafes, the Testaccio Market and almost no other tourists, which I enjoy.

My husband and I will be staying in Monti in an AirBnB apartment in October. We've stayed in the Centro area in the past but are pushing our boundaries a bit and we are trying out Monti, which is near Termini. It's written up as an up and coming (or even, up and already came!) area, with a lot of restaurants and shops.

We thought Testaccio very interesting but a bit too far afield for a short stay. What I like about Monti is that it's very convenient but still somewhat away from the heavily touristed center.

The apartment we are renting for 5 nights:

We walked from our apartment across the river all over Trastevere, took the #8 tram from there north (Campo de' Fiori, etc.), walked along the river on the near side to other sites north, took a short ride on the #3 tram directly to the Colosseum & beyond. I never give much weight to recommendations that haven't been personally experienced. It's why we ask here, isn't it?

I'll add, it's relatively inexpensive compared to better known areas, a real find, in my opinion.

We have reserved this apartment:

For early December this year. It ticked all of my boxes. Maybe it would work for you.

I always choose lodgings in Rome from www.booking.com . You can find "type of structure" under "filter" and choose "apartment" there. They have a wide selection and they usually don't require a deposit.(Sometimes you can get a discount for advance payment, though.)

Every apartment I've rented through booking.com accepted credit cards, so there was no need to withdraw large amounts of cash.

I also prefer booking.com. I like it that many units have a cancellable option. That the fees are listed in the small box next to the price. And that when I've needed customer service, they've come through for me. I have used homeaway.com when I couldn't get a unit I looked on booking.com. It turned out well. I find it harder to figure out the cleaning fees on that site.

One thing: With a family of 5 you will have far fewer options to choose from than a smaller group would have.

So enter your dates. If you want wifi. A/C. Max budget. I think you'll find that you'll probably have just a few apartments for each of the neighborhoods Fodors members mentioned above, at most.

From there, I wouldn't get stuck on which target neighborhood, so much as where your unit is specifically located. Compare the booking.com map (or airbnb map, etc) against a Google map of the same area. Enlarge both maps. Do a street view of the blocks near your potential apartment. On the Google Map do a "restaurants nearby" etc., to see what is actually nearby. These steps may change your mind between your finalists.
