I went to the apartment sites. They are useful but I have no idea which areas are safe for the two girls. Any one recommend streets and/or location?

I spent a week in February in this apartment:

http://www.habitatapartments.com/pedrera.htm

It has a great location in the Eixample near the Gaudi building La Pedrera. There is a king size bed made from two twins attached together in the bedroom, and there are two sofas suitable for sleeping in the living room.

This would be a fine area for the girls to look, even if they didn't take this particular apartment.

Hello

I frequently come to Barcelona and stay in a nice neighbourhood right next to Plaza Catalunya in the studios and apartments of www.apartmentsbarcelona.com.es

I think they are ok and so do my kids.

OUr family of 2 adults and a toddler stayed in the El Born last May right across from the Banys Oriental hotel. Safe area but lively for young adults.
