Anyone ever hear of the town called Tispanjlak, Hungary

We are thinking of going to Hungary on vacation. My husband's fathers family came over to the United States from the town called Tispanjlak. This is according to the passenger manifest. This town doesn't seem to exist anymore. How do I find out where this town used to be in Hungary? Has anyone ever heard of Tispanjlak?

Even Google doesn't recognize the name as you have spelled it. Could it possibly be spelled any other way?

Meliss: Try checking out www.gotohungary.com
They have maps and major towns listed, as well as info for contacting the tourist board. Good luck!

I checked www.mappy.com because when you enter a city name and it doesn't exist, they give quite an extensive list of place names that resemble it.

I didn't immediately see something that looks like a close match, but I think it's worth checking out! Good luck

Your father's family may well have emigrated from Hungary at a time when the country was much larger. In the Treaty of Trianon in 1920, Hungary lost 71% of its territory; towns that formerly had Hungarian names received new and different names.

And some of the people entering information into documents were pretty slipshod...

The closest I can think of is Kisbanya, which is now called Herja and located in Romania.

Thanks for all your help. I am sure it will be like finding a needle in a haystack.

Names change over the years but sometimes we have an incorrect name or spelling. I could not find my fathers village in Italy. Try asking your nearest Hungarian Consulate or email them. The name may sound like something close to them
