Anyone else having problems with Dan Dooley?

Is anyone else having ( or had in the past) problems with Dan Dooley?

I have been trying for almost a week to get a straight answer from them as to why the quote for an Automatic toyota corolla from them was over $100 MORE than the exact same car from AutoEurope.

The emails I get back ( when and if they decide to actually reply!) are cryptic and very condescending - and rarely answer the questions I have posed.

One part of the frustration on my part is that at the bottom of each of these useless emails, it says - call our 1-800 number - unfortunately, when I did that on Sunday - no answer - just a machine that didn't even tell me the hours when I could talk to a real person.

I had really hoped to rent from an "irish" company - thinking that it would lesson headaches while I am there, but now I am thinking that if this is how they treat potential customers, how badly do they treat paid-up customers.

(Every email I have gotten back from Autoeurope, has been personal, cordial and extremely helpful. )

Any comments? Suggestions?

Companies in Ireland tend to be open regular business hours, 9-5 M-F. This includes rental car companies. Once when I flew in on a Sunday, I had to arrange to meet the Avis guy, who came in specially to rent me a car. Otherwise, the counter was closed.

But why do you care if Dan Dooley's price is higher? Rent from AutoEurope, then. What's the big deal? Different companies have different prices. Why do you have the need to uncover some conspiracy? Relax. That's what life's about in Ireland.

Anyway, I always rent from Avis when I'm there. I've never had a problem, and they have the best policies about taking cars across borders.

The 1-800 number I am supposed to be calling is from the United States office, not the Ireland office.

Debbie, It may be because Dooley includes full insurance in their rate and AE shows it as an option. My daughter and Irish son-in-law just returned from Ireland, had a car reserved with Dooley and Dooley insisted they take the full insurance, even though they used a platinum card. A friend arrived at the same time, rented thru Avis and had no problem with declining CDW/LDW.

I always use Avis in Ireland. I have never had a problem with their service. Friendly and helpful service. When I picked up a car in Dublin Airport to continue my vacation before flying out of Shannon, the cab driver dropped me off at the wrong location. The Avis guy drove me over to the counter, waited for me and drove me back. I thought that was great! Forget Dan Dooley....if they did not give you the service you deserve they don't need your business!!

I rented a car from Dan Dooley and the only bad thing I can say is that the car was filthy! Inside & out. Plus when we discovered that the windshield wipers were trashed and bought new ones Dooley refused to reimburse us.

Just got back from Ireland and used Dan Dooley. I did not like the first car thqt I WAS GIVEN...Many miles, flat tire, and was not comfortable in the back seat ( Had seniors with me). Saw a bigger Auto in the lot and asked to trade up to that car...no problem and no additional charge. Must say that all the counters:
Avis
Hertz
Bunratty Payless
Sixt
Eurocar

Dan Dooley was the most crowded, I guess their advertising in the USA is working!

The diff b/w Dan Dooley and Autoeurope is that with Autoeurope you may get the worst car of your life......or the best car of your life..... I've used hertz, Avis and Budget through autoeurope. The best service I received has been when I go through Dan Dooley. If I have a problem with the car the have been able to fix it right away... When I travel to Ireland I always book through Kitty Ward Travel/American Express at 800-752-3718 they have good rates with dan dooley.. Talk to Louise there, she'll help you out.

Debbie,

Dan Dooley most like is including the Insurance, which is highly recommended. Visa, Mastercard and American Express do not cover you on car insurance in Ireland and England....even the Gold and plat cards do NOT cover you. So you should get the Insurance. Also your insurance on your car in the U.S. does not cover you in Ireland.
Check with your credit card companies about CDW/PAI protection and with your Auto Insurance...
Be certain to be covered, My friend was not and it cost him over 18,000 IEP that about $25,000 u.s. It was an expensive lesson. Don't let anyone tell you that your CC's and on car insurance covers you.... It's not true

Thanks everyone for your comments.
I did end up going with Dan Dooley.

I called Mastercard, and got them to send me the paperwork to prove my Platinum card DOES cover CDW in Ireland. According to them, it is often that the rental agency does not want to accept it. Dan Dooley said they do, so everything should be fine. I did however take the other ins. including the Deductible coverage, so basically there is nothing that I should be liable for.

According to the DD rep. the reason they are so slow with emails is that they only have one manager answering them, and she gets behind.

Oh, and according to the final quote I got on the phone, that first quote was WAY off. I have the car with all the ins (-cdw) and an extra driver for $340 for 8 days. the original quote - no ins - was $371. I guess it pays to keep after them.

thanks again.
Debbie
