Believe me I support our country, President and troups in Iraq. It is so shallow for people to say they support our troups and then bad mouth the war. That is demoralizine to our troups. I want my kids and grand kids to grow up in a safe world and better confront it now than later. You think it is for oil? Then stop driving your car! Sadam must go and will go! What a monster. I have been to France several times, past tense!

Konejos, Sad thing is I heard my Grandfather say the same. I heard my Father say the same thing, referring to fighting the war so my children would live in a safer place or not have to do this. I hear soldiers today say "I am doing this so my sons/daughters won't have to fight a war. Every generation says the same comment. As long as there are difference of opinions, religions, there will be wars. On that point, you are right something needs to be done at this time in history. There is a mayor in N.J. who has banned the use of yellow ribbons in the town. Some support our troops get for laying down there lives for the freedom we enjoy!!
Of course, it is not the same to travel when the world is at war than when it is at peace (or relative peace). To say we should just ignore the War in Iraq and/or 9/11 and pretend that the world is the same as before 9/11 is nonsense. Things will never be the normal of pre 9/11. We are in the new normal.

With all that is going on, I do have a lot of trouble focussing on recreational travel and blithely taking off for Europe. But, that's me.

I do most of my long distance traveling via home exchange. Last summer and this year were very tough. I ended up in Arizona last summer and had a fine time in the Grand Canyon. This year I never got a summer home exchange at all because lots of people are conflicted and uncertain about long distance travel--and then there is the value of the American dollar.

So, last weekend I made plans to vacation in the US and Canada this year. I am doing two elderhostels. I will be going rafting on one of them and to a US national park on one of them. On the way, to the second one, I will be going to the Stratford Ontario Shakespeare Festival. I am sure I will have a fine time. Now that I have made plans, I am also certain a home exchange offer will arrive.

I did a lot of European traveling before all of this and am grateful I did. I am certain the time will come to go again, but just not right now. You cannot really enjoy yourself if you are focussed on the international situation. And I do understand quite well the point the original poster made.

What a bunch of shallow WUSSES!
You are deeply sad because you just saw on your teevee/paper that there is a war on.
There have been worse wars going on all your life but they weren't on your teevee/paper.
So now you are such a sypathetic character although war was OK before - but then it didn't affect your vacation??
Perhaps at Saddam's trial we should charge him with ruining your vacation. You really are in a tuff position, I bet he's glad he doesnt have your problems.

I'm all for holding Saddam responsible for ruining my vacation but how do I litigate against him successfully when I'm flying in the opposite direction and how many dollars could I expect?

Will I be able to afford a new pair of white sneakers?
