Anybody stayed at the Hotel Intercontinental Berchtesgaden?

I love Berchtesgaden! We usually stay in a ferienwohnung though, so I can't comment on the hotels. I did want to say that we ate dinner at the Nutzkaser that Emily mentions above. Even if you don't stay there, the food and views are worth the drive up there for a meal. The restaurant has huge windows that overlook the mountains, and the food was really good.

I don't think that you will have a bad time if you choose the Intercontinental. It's a beautiful location and can be a very peaceful area when the tourists "get off the mountain".
The best part of all of this area is the "Bavarian" part - warm, homey restaurants where any one can sit with any one, people that you just met inviting to their homes for dessert,small little guesthouses that you treasure forever (have you noticed that everyone has their favorite spot in this area), beautiful mountain vistas, and hiking to die for. If I ever win the lottery, I am going to have someone just drop me off at the beginning of summer somewhere in these mountains, and then just hike until the snows come.
You will notice that there are many, many guesthouses in the area. Each one is better than the next and there is something for everyone. When you become accustomed to Bavaria, you will appreciate the unique experience of staying in the small guesthouses because you meet people and have experiences that are not available in larger, more impersonal hotels. That is the crux of the problem when folks respond about the Intercontinental. It really isn't Bavarian and it flies in the face of everything that this area is about.
Let us know how the hotel was when you return and I hope that you have a wonderful trip!

That was supposed to be " people that you just met inviting you to their homes..."
The soup at the Nutzkaser is just marvelous...order some even if you don't want it. All of the menu items here are excellent!!! I can taste that Schweinhaxen!!

I might just use the 4 nights I still haven't planned for and just stay in someone's guesthouse in Bavaria!

I'm one that prefers a more typical Bavarian experience. We've stayed in the same ferienwohnung (vacation apartment) twice and the views from the balcony are amazing. I'm with Emily though; of all the places I've visited in Europe, the one area that I would love to seriously call home is this region. There is just something about it that draws me in and makes me want to return again and again. One day when I win the lottery I will move to the B'gaden region and open my own ferienwohnung....

I'm sure you have already selected a hotel, Masterphil, but we LOVED the Intercontinental in Berchtesgaden. We were only able to spend one night there though instead of two (hubby got sick in Munich and we had to spend an extra night in the hotel there as he was too weak to drive)so that was a downer, but it was a great place for my husband to relax and get over his queasy stomach.
The heated outdoor pool was AMAZING and we'd go again just for that. We ate at the Bayernstube restaurant, which was good but kind of expensive.

We stayed there two nights. I think it is a great business hotel, but not a very "warm" place. Everything was performed (well) in a business-like fashion (check-in, dinner, etc.). I just didn't get a "warm" feel from the place. It is beautiful. Pool/spa area very nice. Bar area was nice and waitress was the nicest person we met there.
Not sure I would go to Berchtesgaden again, but if I did I probably would stay at Hotel Intercontinental again.
