Anybody stayed at the Hotel Intercontinental Berchtesgaden?

I have not stayed at the Intercontinental. When I was there in '05 I stayed at the Alpenhof and was delighted with everything, and in fact I changed my itinerary so I could stay there an additional night. Just an idea. Kathleen

Sounds like we will be crossing paths in September.
Currently spending 2 nights in Hallstatt and thinking about 2 nights in Berchtesgaden at Hotel Intercontinental (outdoor heated pool in beautiful setting).
Wondering out loud if 2 nights in Berchtesgaden is time well spent. After Berch thinking of heading to Dolomites for 4 nights after reading ms. go's report.
I have never gone to Europe with so few definitive plans just weeks away from leaving! Right now only definites are Prague, train to Vienna, rent car, drive to Cesky Krumlov, drive to Hallstatt, than 6 nights before flying back from Munich. Going to visit St. Wolfgang and St. Gilgen to determine if a couple of nights there is warranted.
Based on all I have read, I don't think there are too many wrong choices in the Salzkammergut/Munich/Innsbruck regions.
4 weeks until lift off!!!

Well, I'm not sure I can compete with an outdoor heated pool but we really enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Wittelsbach.
It is a pretty hotel with a great location and reasonably priced. They also have a lift and parking behind the hotel. But they don't have an outdoor heated pool I'm afraid!
We had never been to Berchtesgaden before 2007 but thoroughly enjoyed our time there. We actually stayed 3 nights and then spent 3 nights in St. Gilgen.
Planning another 3 night stay in St. Gilgen on this trip also. It's the only place on this trip that we've been before but there's still so much we didn't see.
You are visiting a number of our favorites so I hope you enjoy them as much as we have.

The Intercontinental is the former site of the General Walker Hotel which was used by our armed forces for many years. It's a beautiful site, perched on a bluff overlooking Berchtesgaden and it's very close to the parking area for the busses that go to the summit of the Kehlstein- "Eagle's Nest" (about halfway up the mountain). The downside of this area is that if you want to go out at nite, you will have to drive halfway down the mountain to get to town. That doesn't bother us but if you are not "steep hill" friendly you might not like this aspect.
I am disappointed at the architecture of this hotel as the Gen'l Walker was so gorgeous and very Bavarian. The IH is quite modern. There were many tunnels underneath the Walker and I wonder if they closed all of those up.
I have been to this area many, many times and I would not hestitate to stay this far up but we are used to driving in the area. Are you using points?
Lately, we are very happy with stays in nearby Ramsau at the Hotel Rehlegg and at the Nutzkaser. The Nutzkaser is a terrific value and has stunning views of the nearby Watzmann massif.The food at the Nutzkaser is so good, we ended up eating there nearly every nite. The soups are to die for...
The Rehlegg is a bit more upscale and does have an outdoor pool. They also have terrific food and I enjoyed the "honey" bar at the breakfast table in the morning.
You pretty much cannot go wrong no matter your choice in this area. Good luck!

EmilyC...Thanks for the great info! I didn't realize it's proximity to Eagle's nest. "Soup to die for" has my name all over it.
We kind of play hard all day and stay close to home at night, so location halfway up the hill is fine. We stayed at Riffelalp Resort in Zermatt last year, same kind of thing.

I'm with scatcat on this one. We stayed at the Hotel Bavaria in May and LOVED it. Spotlessly clean room, amazing breakfast buffet, and wonderful dinners in their restaurant. It's very close to the train station if you are taking public transportation, yet quiet. We would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Hotel Wittelsbach looks really nice and gets some great reviews.
Ditto with Hotel's Rehlegg and Bavaria!
Not sure which I am going to choose. Wittelsbach reviews are quite compelling.
I have to decide if I want to use these two days for a splurge stay or save that for the Hotel Adler in Ortisei Dolomites.

I stayed at Hotel Wittelsbach in September 2008. It was nice. Really good breakfast also. I tried the Hotel Bavaria because it was also recommended here. And I could walk to it, but I had to take a taxi to and from the train station to the Wittelsbach. It is walkable through a path, but not with luggage. It is a toss-up as to which I actually liked better. And the taxi was only 8€ each way.

Very mysterious...not much written about this place. Only 2 reports on TripAdvisor.

I would highly agree with EmilyC RE the Rehlegg in Ramsau. We've stayed there a couple of times and have found it to be quiet, nicely appointed and their meals are outstanding. In September we'll be staying at the Schiffmeister, across from the boat landing at the head of the Königsee. We use the Schiffmeister quite often, also. Although we watched the Intercontinental being built I would not personally stay there. It's very modern, pricey and totally out of character considering all other buildings in that area, especially given the historic aspects of that area. We also sometimes stay directly across the street from the Intercontinental at Zum Türken. It's a small inn situated immediately next door to where Hitler's 'Berghof' mansion was located. I stay there when I am doing research on the NSDAP and WWII history. The Türken is only about 100 yards from the Intercontintal Hotel as well as the parking area from which you get the bus up to The Eagle's Nest, but it is mostly hidden from view. Under the Türken, for a few Euro's you can access the most extensive tunnels and bunkers that remain on the entite Obersalzburg. Except for a short tunnel/bunker experience near the Documentation Center all others have been archeologically documented and filled in by the Berchtesgaden National Park. The Documentation Center is located in the former Nazi Guest House and is immediately behind where the General Walker Hotel was located. The General Walker was last used as an RR resort for the US military before it was torn down several years ago. It is not however, the site of the new Intercontinental Hotel which as about 1/4 mile away. The Intercontinental is situated on a small knoll which was the site of Hermann Göring's chateau on the Obersalzburg. Göring's home was bombed and ultimately torn down. It was positioned to look down on Hitler's 'Berghof' about 200 yards away.
Although the Trip Advisor reviews rave (for the most part) about the Intercontinental Hotel it is indeed very expensive at around $450 per night plus a lot of 'add-on'expenses. As one reviewer put it it is 'for the exclusive', in other words to keep out common folk. It certainly flys in the face of sensivity for the history of the entire Obersalzburg area and it is the only commercial business of any type around.
Sorry for diverting from the intent of you inquiry but I teach the history of that area and I find it reprehensible that the area be overtaken for the good of such a limited audience who for the most part could care less except for their personal comfort, etc.

Reviews for this place continue to be over the top!
Is the complaint more about the land that it occupies; that it just doesn't fit with the surrounding area; or, that it is a very expensive hotel?
