Anybody care to see my Rome restaurant map?

After reading much about avoiding bad restaurants, finding restaurants, etc. I decided I would take the recommendations from here and slowtrav and make a Google restaurant map for Rome. I am sure that most of you have done this also, I just thought that perhaps someone might get some use out of it.

Here's my disclaimer. I have never been to Rome, so these are simply restaurants that I have read about. I focused on simple places and not elegant ones because my DD(18) is going with us and she's not a very adventurous eater. I also put alot of 'inexpensive' choices on the map as my other DD (20) will be there with a class and will be on a tight budget.

The green markers generally are the less expensive places. If I got some of these wrong, please let me know. Actually any corrections of inaccuracies are appreciated.

Here's how much of a geek I am. Since we won't have easy access to this map in Rome, I used a mapping program and printed page size maps for 3 areas - Pantheon and east, Piazza Navona and west, and Campo dei Fiori. Then I plotted out the restaurants in those areas on the map. That way, when walking around, 3 sheets of paper give me most of the info I need on restaurants. If I have time, I'll do Trastevere before I leave.

I have to credit Missypie for inspiring me to do this. Her comments on her trip to Rome, and subsequent trip to Spain (Barcelona?) made me think the time investment would be worth it.

Good morning phieaglefan,

Good map with easy links!

Another pizzeria you may wish to consider adding is the popular Da Baffetto (corner of Governo del Vecchio and Via Sora). This place is packed each night, so if you don't want a long wait, I'd suggest you get there close to opening time (6:30).

Thank you! We've not been yet but this map is so much better than my 'restaurant list' which is a page of scribbled notes!

Fantastic! I HAVE to do this for my next trip. That's just the type of the obsessive travel planning I love to do.

Was it hard? Time consuming? Is there a way to print out notes/comments about the restaurant with the maps?

Well, it certainly looks a lot better than my hand-written handiwork! I think you will be very pleased with yourself for having gone to the effort to map the restaurants.

We stayed on via de Cappellari, too!

What a great tool. You get the obsessive/compulsive traveler award of the year!

We ate at two on your list, and liked them:
Maccheroni Ristorante at Piazza delle Coppelle, 44, phone 06 68307895

Il Matriciano, on Via dei Gracchi, 49- 61. (Reservations advised—phone 063213040, or 063212327)

PhiEagle-wow, that IS impressive!

Glad to see you have my favorite listed-LA SCALINATA-I'm guessing that will be one of your favorites too, it's so well-located between the Spanish Steps and Trevi, and the food so good.

I've done a similar thing for our last several trips; this trip, I plotted all of our restaurant ideas using my personal space on mappy.com. It really helps - if we're in a specific area and want a restaurant, I just pull out my map. I'm one step down on the geek ladder, though. I enlarged my streetwise map of Paris, then added the restaurants plotted on mappy.com to my streetwise map by hand, by number. The numbers correspond to a color-coded key that I created as a Word doc. Colors? Pink for patisseries, green for bistros, blue for restaurants, etc. Yes, it took a while. But I've realized that I will return to Paris, so will be using the mapy again (and again, and again, I hope).

Now if I could just download those co-ordinates to the Points of Interest - Restaurants feature of Pocket Streets in my iPAQ...

Oh, wait! They're already there - with turn-by-turn directions from anywhere in the city.

Wow, thanks for all of the great comments. I realize it's incomplete - and kopp, I have Da Baffetto on my printed maps but I'm not sure why it didn't end up on here.

If anyone would like the printable ones, just e-mail me at
[email protected] and I will gladly send them to you. They're in PDF format. I don't think all of the restaurants from my google map made it to the hard copy, but most did. It's six pages which I'll print double sided.

Kristina, it took a bit of time, but it was not hard. My biggest problem is the inability to get hard copy directly from Google. Maybe someone else has figured it out. That's why I ended up plotting them on a separate map, so I could print them & take them with me.

Missypie, I knew you stayed there. I went back and re-read your trip report after Hagan reported the street being very noisy. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Maureen, This is my 20 year old's first trip abroad, and I am happy to report she has inherited my obsessed-with-travel gene!

Lexma, I'm impressed. I did the plotting too, on the printed maps. But alas, no color coordination!

Thanks again for all of the positive comments.

Robes - I was just thinking the same thing. I have a ton of restaurants in Paris marked with a pushpin on Pocket Streets.

Nice map though!
