I went to Bristol for the first time in Dec and found it a wonderful town - start with the restored docks and canals right in town centre - there are museum ships - then climb the hill to the cathedral on a pleasant square facing one of UK's better and most elegant-looking universities.

There a number of things to do in Bristol. Here are but two.

I suggest you visit St. Mary Redcliffe Church that Queen Elizabeth I described as "the fairest, goodliest and most famous parish church in England".

Many things in and around Bristol are tied to Isambard Kingdom Brunel (look him up on the web) and a visit to the SS Great Britain and the Maritime Heritage Center is worthwhile.

There is a website with many other suggestions:

http://visitbristol.co.uk/site/home

If you are driving, there are many other places nearby: Wells, Bath, Cheddar Gorge.

I recommend a BnB, Tor Farm, that was convenient to all the places I've mentioned. The website is:

There are special events this year in Bristol to mark the 200th anniversary of Brunel's birth. One of his masterpieces is the Clifton Bridge over the Avon Gorge (though it was actually completed after his death). For boat trips through the Avon Gorge, see www.bristolferryboat.co.uk and www.bristolpacket.co.uk.
Bath is only a short train ride from Bristol. Cheddar and Wells can be reached by bus.

We're only going to have an evening in Bristol, arriving about 4 pm and flying out next morning at 11 am. So, any suggestions for a hotel near the airport and a divine restaurant in town for our one evening?

I believe the only hotel near BRS is a Holiday Inn Express. There may be B&Bs nearby as well, but I have no info. You can easily stay in Bristol, and head out to the airport next morning. It's not that far from town, though traffic is often poor.

I've walked by the Glassboat, and it seemed really nice. [I had dinner on the next boat.]
