I'm currently reading Barzini's "The Italians," as well as Gibbon's "Decline and Fall (abridged)."<BR><BR>Here's a tip: Purchase the "Rough Guide to Italy." In the back, there is a bibliography with a critical review and summary of every book mentioned so far in this thread...<BR><BR>

I also recommend the Agony and the Ecstasy. It has become my favorite book of all time, and I plan to reread all 600+ pages of it before I return to Italy in March. You learn quite a bit from it, but the story is so engrossing, it is difficult to put down.
