Highly recommend you go to the Scillies. One of my most favorite places in the world.

My girlfriend and I put out our thumbs and hitchhiked there from our homes in Southampton when we were in our early 20s. I fell in love with the islands, returned the next couple of years, and have been back quite a few times since then with friends and family. The last few years, my husband and I have taken our grandchildren there, last year renting a house with the beach a few steps away.

I'd recommend at least four nights which gives you one day each for Tresco, St. Agnes and St. Martin with, as suggested above, the arrival and the final day for St. Marys.

You won't be able to take your car over, but as others have said, not necessary.

Here is a link to some photos from a trip my hubby and I took in 2012: https://scillyisles.shutterfly.com/

@flanneruk - thanks very much for the info. Buying the Senior Railcard hasn't been worth the cost for me in the past, but it may well be on this trip, especially if it caps my Oyster at a lower amount. I'll be in London for eight nights, and although I'll be central, I love to be able to get on a bus or the tube for just a few stops. I need to do the math on the train trips.

Are you saying I would get the discount on the night train to Penzance? The advance purchase single sleeper is only 49 GBP, which seems remarkably low considering it's bed and (some) breakfast as well as transport.

Also, I wanted to confirm that if I buy a ticket from A to D, I can get off at B and C on the way.

@evecolorado - thanks so much for the link - you have some great photos. I won't have a car, so no problem with not taking it. That was quite a trip back to the mainland!

Thursdaysd - the ferry is not a car ferry so even if you did have a car, you can't take it. the only way to get cars on and off is to have them craned onto the boat- it's quite fun watching them doing this, especially as they occasionally get it wrong and miss!

Most of the cars on St Mary's are old wrecks, so far as I remember.
