Any hints on car hire- Sth of France

Hi
We're looking to pick up a car in Montpellier on 9 September and drop it in Nice on 13 September. Maybe 1.6 or 1.8 litre. Any recommendations on whether to book it on the web or turn up on the day at one of the car hire firms?

Thanks.

the best thing anyone can tell you is that it is less expensive if you rent a car from the stats.

If you wait until you arrive in France you will pay about twice what you will booking it from the States, and may not get anything close to what you want. So book in advance.

I recommend AutoEurope. You can reach them at 1-800-223-5555 or go to their website at www.autoeurope.com. Personally, I'd call them after reveiwing the website, as their staff are very knowledgable and it seems this may be a first France rental for you.

Oops...I just realized since you said "car hire," you are probably not booking from the USA. Sorry about that. Still....call AutoEurope.

Thanks guys, I just needed tipping one way or the other. What a great resource this is!

And you're right, StCirq. Je suis d'Australie. - Gold Coast - just looking out my office window at the blue Pacific as I type this. Better get back to work!

We pre-booked AutoEurope and found them quite good. We picked up a car at Avignon and dropped it at Aix. However, after getting there, found that Hertz or Avis would have been cheaper. Call your local Avis agent to check. Also, be aware about manual vs automatic cars and the rentals for the same. You can slo get competing quotes and see if you can talk them down a bit! It works sometimes!

AutoEurope does not charge a fee for pickup and dropoff in different locations within a country.
Also, they will match or beat anyone's price. They lowered the cost of a rental van by $600 last year when I found a lower price from another source.

I just rented a car for the south of France....pick up in Nice and drop off in Marseille.
I always check Auto Europe first and many others.
Got the best deal from ITS. It is a consolidator located in Florida. It might be worth your while to check them out also.

Have a great trip.
I must tell you that we always rent an automatic. They gave us by far the best rate on an automatic.
