some more:
"la luce di miei occhi"
"il pirata"
"chiedimi se sono felice"
"ricetta d'amore" (this is the italian title of a german film which has italian themes, and does have a few scenes in italy; sorry i don't know either the german or english title)

anything with toto

This is "Obsessed" with Cliff Robertson and Genevieve Bujold, set in New Orleans and Floreance. Made in 1976 by Brian DePalma.

This thread is so great I had to top it. I joined netflix.com, and a lot of these movies are available. One to watch out for on DVD is "Io Non Ho Paura," or "I'm not scared." From The New York Times website:

2003 - Italy - Art/Foreign

This visually dazzling thriller set in the extreme south of Italy during the summer gazes at the world through the eyes of Michele (Giuseppe Cristiano), a 10-year-old boy living with his little sister and parents in a tiny impoverished village. Adapted from Niccolò Ammaniti's lean, best-selling novel about a 1978 kidnapping, this coming-of-age tale methodically peels away Michele's protective blinders. One day Michele discovers and eventually befriends Filippo (Mattia Di Pierro), a half-blind, frighteningly disheveled boy his own age who is buried in a pit next to an abandoned house where Michele and his friends play daredevil games. Filippo turns out to have been kidnapped. Even after one of the kidnappers is revealed as Michele's own father (Dino Abbrescia), and the boy's innocence has been shattered, the movie refuses to go for cheap, vicious thrills and continues to view the adults through the curtain of Michele's trust. ? Stephen Holden, The New York Times

I didn't see this one on Dog_Mother's last list -

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
There are a few scenes from Venice, including the Campo San Barnaba church, just off the Ca' Rezzonico stop on the vaporetto. Peace.

If you are going to Naples and Capri,

"Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow", Loren and Mastroianni.

"It Started in Naples", Loren and Gable.

Come September (Gina Lolobrigida and Rock Hudson) -- I don't think anyone has mentioned this one yet. I believe it's set in Milan and the Lake region. It's a silly, feel-good sort of movie that I have to stop and watch whenever it comes on TCM.

Also agree with:

Roman Holiday
Bread and Tulips
A Room with a View
Only You
Il Postino
Dangerous Beauty
Wings of the Dove (Footage of London too)
Cinema Paradiso

The Night of the Falling Stars was a film that moved my wife and me. We never agreed before on a film.

Recently saw "La Meglio Gioventù", a 6 hour long family chronicle that played in various parts of Italy and Sicily. Beautiful movie.

I saw "Non Ti Muovere" this weekend (Don't Move). Penelope Cruz is in it, and I heard that she learned Italian just for this role. It was very raw, and at sometimes odd movie. I really enjoyed it though.

There were a few scenes at Timoteo's (the main male character's) beach house that were beautiful, I wonder where they were shot?

I am going to Florence in November but a zillion years ago I saw an Italian film about a man who sold his brother to the Church to become a castrata - he throws goat turds at a Cardinal, and he is invited to dinner where he is served turds, the little brother runs away and the turd thrower is forced to take his brother's place. Does anyone know this movie? It was wonderful and I have never seen or heard of it again. Help Italian film buffs please.

oldtrout,

I am not 100% certain, but I think you mean the film titled Farinelli subtitled "Il Castrato", about two Italian brothers, one of which is castrated and becomes a great tenor (or higher) . I forget the name of the Dutch? actor who plays Handel. I also liked it quite a bit and was just going to post a recommendation as I have not seen it mentioned above.

A Snapshot of Rome on Film in the Cinema

Mamma Roma (1962), a stunning performance by Anna Magnani; under the direction of Pier Paolo Pasolini.
Fellini¹s Rome (1972), the gran maestro guides us through his adopted city.
La Famiglia (1987), a dream cast including Vittorio Gassman, Stefania Sandrelli, Fanny Ardant, Ricky Tognazzi; directed by Ettore Scola.
Big Deal on Madonna Street (1958), starring Marcello Mastroianni, Vittorio Gassman, Claudia Cardinale; directed by Mario Monicello.
Caro Diario (1993), starring and directed by Nanni Moretti (episodes 1 and 3 take place in Rome).

Just found this thread on Google when trying to search for an old Italian film. Maybe someone can help me?

Does anyone remember an Italian film about the government charging people to breath?

Apart from that brief synopsis, all I can remember is the leading man couldn't pay his bill, and was huffing and puffing his way into the government building.

I know it sounds crazy, but it really was a film, and I want to see if I can find it.
