Pal - it depended. in larger/smarter places where we paid with c/card we didn't tip but in small places where the patron/ne was making a particular effort, we did.

annhig - Inotice on Coronation Street that folks routinely tip - rounding to the next pound - saying keep the change- not insubstantial amounts - is this a practice in British pubs or like you say only when you know it is owner-operator?

curious?

Most things in Corrie are fantasy.

(it is fiction.. rising inflection).

The only Brits who tip in pubs are people who have a fantasy about how important they are. Hence the stars and writers of Corrie think it is normal.

I'm sorry that none of you have figured out that tipping is personal or that NONE of you have ever had to work for one, cleaned somebody else's mess in a hotel room, schlepped their bags, or listened to their whines.

me sir, sir, sir, I have

before minimum wage, in a borrowed shirt with no training, I have dealt with vomit etc

and yes dealing with vomit is not part of a normal contract that I would accept.

And if I was in healthcare I would see dealing with vomit sa part of the everyday contract.

What P was talking about was tipping barstaff in a bar, that is a cultural/employment difference between western europe and north america.

Do you tip your nurses?

Tipping is not personal, tipping or not tipping is a cultural/economic custom.
