@ mmyk72: I would encourage you to consult a guidebook or two -- the norms surrounding tapas are clearly covered in most -- and / or to start your own thread. The norms differ in different parts of Spain, but in general, you can always order tapas (and pay for them) wherever they are offered. When they are provided gratis, it's typically with an alcoholic beverage. I would NOT expect it with water, and I can't imagine that many restaurants or bars would simply provide free food to people who take up one of their seats without paying for something.

We were a family of four, two young kids, and none of us drink alcohol. You can still get a free tapa in Granada. But we did order non-alcoholic drinks.

Thanks! good to know.

Kja - I didn't imply getting free tapas and simply walk away. In fact, very rare did I find restaurants serve free water - whenever I order water in Europe, they usually bring out a little bottle (still or w gas) and that bottle usually cost more than beer.

Thanks for the clarification!

You need to ask for tap water if you don't want to be charged.. In France, you can ask for "de l'eau en carafe". or water in a carafe.
