Thank you, Nikki - that is exactly what I was going to say.

If you decide on Luss for your final night, Culag Lochside Guest House is a beautiful location, very comfortable, and not too pricey.

Absolute minimum of 2 -- 3 would give you a nice taste -- and 4 would be leisurely/wonderful.

I would make my way to Inverness and rent a car there. You can then drive to John O'Groats and take a day tour that includes both the boat to Orkney and the bus while you are on Orkney. We loved visiting Skara Brae, the Ring of Brodgar, St. Magnus Cathedral and the Bishop's Palace in Kirkwall. It was nice to leave the car behind at our hotel in John O'Groats and have a wonderful relaxing night when we returned from the day trip.

Next morning we stopped by Duncansby Head and drove back to Inverness, seeing the Grey Cairns of Camster and the Hill o' Many Stanes on the way.

Or you can make your headquarters in the Fort William/Loch Ness or Glencoe region. Kilmartin is an easy day trip from there through Oban.... a visit to Dunstaffnage Castle is a great stop just North of Oban. If you pick this area you can drive across the bridge and visit the isle of Skye.

Okay, now I wonder what you all think of staying in Crinan to see Kilmartin and all the monuments in the glen? It looks like there is only one place to eat in Kilmartin, and I wonder if Crinan might have more possibilities at the end of the day. My driver wants to stay 3 nights and have pubs to visit. We also love to watch boats. If I recall, there is light until fairly late the end of May, so I don't have to limit the sites to 8-5.

I do not know why I have such trouble with planning for Scotland. I want to see everything, but I can't. So I start second guessing. Should I see this instead of that? ARGH!

I haven't looked at the other posts but will respond to your latest. There is a B& B in or very near Kilmartin. Sorry I don't remember the name. Try google. Crinan will give you several options and I believe there's a very nice hotel there. You can also take a boat trip out to the Corrywrecken ( sp? ) whirlpool from there.

historytraveler: Yes, I've seen the B&B in Kilmartin. My concern is, while I could walk around stones and cairns and stuff all day, my traveling partner has different interests. Also, there isn't much variety in eating out in Kilmartin, it seems. Will look at boat trip, that you!
