Amsterdam Sights
I'll be spending 3 days in Amsterdam in a couple of weeks and have gone to the net for places to see. My problem is to arrange some sort of priorities to my lengthly list. That is, places NOT to miss and places to AVOID. Thanks for your help

Bob W

First attempt to post didn't work - I'll try again.

With 3 days I would not miss a canal cruise. I would do it as soon as I got there to get a sense of the city, and if it had to be only one, the night time cruise. Put on your walking shoes and spend at least part of a day in the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh museum (I spent more time in the Van Gogh), walking by the diamond establishments and through Vondelpark which are in the same area. Another day I would spend just wandering the city and also the Jordaan, stopping by the Westerkirk (church) for a look at the little statue of Ann Frank, perhaps buying some cheese at the corner shop and looking in the Delft shop down the block. In a spare half hour I'd take in the Holland Experience show.

I agree to those sites mentioned above. Also important would be a tour of the Anne Frank House. The two museums mentioned were both wonderful. I spent half a day wandering through Vondelpark and thoroughly enjoyed it, but if your time is limited, instead I recommend a day's trip to Volendam and Marken. You can easily get from Volendam to Marken via a quick ferry ride. Marken was just delightful. It would help us if we knew a bit about you -- specificly your interests, age, etc.

Definitely do the canal cruise and the Van Gogh museum. We were only there 3 days and didn't have enough time, so we are headed back in a few weeks. I highly recommend just wandering - there's always something interesting around the corner. Must sees for us on this trip include the Ann Frankhuis, the Jordaan, Bejinhof, and Rijksmuseum. The Red Light District is interesting - but may or may not be for you. I particularly enjoyed the Bloomenmarket, but we were there in April when every color of tulip could be had - 50 tulips for about $5 - or $2 if you bought the day old tulips. Enjoy your trip - it's a captivating city.
Hi Bob,
I was in Amsterdam a few months ago and had a great time. I would highly recommend a nighttime cruise on the canals. It is not as expensive as I thought it would be.
Make sure you get a chance to catch a train to Zaandam. (15 min from Amsterdam). Once you're there, you must visit Zaans Schans (about a mile and a half walk)or rent a bike. I really enjoyed the day I spent there.
Another place I enjoyed in Amsterdam, mentioned earlier is the Begijnhof(sp). Have a great time!

Hi Bob
All the places mentioned are good. One place to avoid would be Madame Toussard's as its over priced for what is in there and is nothing like its counterpart in London. If you a wanting a taste of Holland then I would recomend Volendam and Marken. These are two little dutch fishing villages where people wear the national costumes of that area still. ( for the tourists of course ) It is certainly worth a visit. The Anne Frank House is also another place worth seeing. Hope this is helpful.

Spent 1 full day in Amsterdam(must go back) went to the Anne Frank House-the Van Gogh Museum-a night stroll in the Red Light District-wandered all around-took Trams got lost-but it was wonderful. Stopped at some local bakery while lost and had some great pastries. An ATM machine ate my card-did not interpret in English but figured I could figure out the Dutch version but must have answered somthing wrong-it was Sunday so forget getting it back-went to AMEX office and borrowed on that card! Anyway its a wonderful place-so Enjoy and explore

Hi Bob

Amsterdam is one of my very favourite cities. I love to just walk along the canals, enjoying the atmosphere...and avoiding the bicycles! There are thousands of these boneshakers--and none of them seem to have brakes!

I definitely recommend Anne Frank's House, the Rijksmuseum and a walk around the Red Light District. Also, the canal cruises are excellent.

Don't bother doing a diamond factory tour. My mother was in Amsterdam last weekend and went to one and found it a waste of time.

Some nice Brown Cafes (atmospheric pubs serving good beer and food) are: Het Molenpad (Prinsengracht 653) and Aas van Bokalen (Keizersgracht 335). (My 2 favourites)

Others:
Twee Prinsen (Prinsengracht 27) Der Prins (Prinsengracht 124), Van Puffelen (Prinsengracht 377). Also, the bar at the American Hotel in Leidseplein is nice for cocktails (Art Deco style).

My other favourite restaurant in Amsterdam is Speciaal, a brilliant Indonesian restaurant, which serves “Rijsttafel” a shared banquet of about 20 dishes (good value). This was recommended to us the first time we went to Amsterdam by our hotel and it was great. We have been back since. It's at Nieuwe Leliestraat 143.

Have a great time!
