Amsterdam Questions

My husband and I will be in Amersterdam October 10 through 15. Most travel guides provide information on spring and summer travel there but very little on what to expect in October. Please advise as to weather -- we know it will be cool and rainy but have little specfic information about just how cool and rainy and how we should pack for the weather. Also, your favorite attractions, restaurants, hotels, etc., would be appreciated.

Check any weather channel before you leave.
www.weather.com will give you a 10-day forecast which will give you an idea about temperatures while you're there.
Expect a mixture of sun, rain and wind in October. Bring layer, raincoat and an umbrella.

www.timeout.com will give you some good ideas about attractions.

Hi! temperature will be between 10 to 20 degrees celsius, I would say, (ok, 20 only if its very nice) - sorry, have no idea what that is in Fahrenheit? - and it can be quite windy. Rainy as well, I find here in Holland it rains at least once a day, thats normal. but its usually not big thuderstorms. I would say the weather is comparable to London in october, except it may be windier here.

Absolute must, especially if its just the two of you, is a boat tour on the canals at night - most tour companies have "candlelight tours" (cheese and wine) in the evening, with the bridges illuminated and so close to the houseboats and houses it gives you a very interesting and romantic glimpse of the city. We just love it, as you can tell.

if I think of more I will post more another time. have a great time!
kat

I was there for the 1st time this summer. Even in June I got a mixture of sunny, rainy, gray, and WINDY weather.

My favorite neighborhoods were Vondelpark and Leidseplein (also heard good things about the Jordaan). I was less impressed by the central area around the train station, the Dam, the red light district. My favorite restaurants were Italian and Greek near my hotel.

I stayed in an inexpensive (57euro) little place I wouldn't necessarily recommend. But have seen lots of favorable postings that include: Estherea, Hotel Ambassade, Brouwer, Hotel Toren, The Bridge Hotel.

I was in A'dam in mid-October last year and would recommend a lightweight raincoat that you can layer a sweater or two under as needed, plus a collapsible umbrella and a pair of gloves. We had a bit of rain most days, nothing to interfere with our nonstop museum rounds. We also enjoyed several sunny crisp fall days -- perfect for strolling in the Jordaan.
If your are from Florida or Southern California, you might find it cold, but to me it was just like November in the Mid-Atlantic states -- cool, nothing harsh.

I was there in February and monitored weather.com during the week preceding my trip, but was unprepared for the wind. I wish I'd packed silk long underwear.

My travel companions and I would choose a destination (museum, Anne Frank House) and explore the surrounding neighborhood. Wandering in and out of the shops and cafes were my favorite part of the trip.

Agreeing with Brenda above, I was fine with the rain I encountered and being summer it was only a little bit cold... but that WIND thing, I'd never experienced that before. Amsterdam is VERY flat and it does blow!!!
