Amsterdam hotels

Hi everyone! I'm hoping that someone out there can give me some info on a good, centrally located, but not too expensive hotel in Amsterdam. (By not too expensive, I am talking $250 - $400 a night! We would like to keep it around $100 - 125 a night, though) We are going the weekend of Feb 5th and need something soon. It has to be clean. Thanks for any help you can give us!

In 1995, my husband and I stayed at Hotel Toren on Kaisergracht and loved it. It was around $125 per night at the time. Our room was a nice size with a gorgeous canal view. The hotel is centrally located-very close to the Anne Frank House. We were able to walk everywhere, never once taking public transportation. I found the staff to be very friendly as well. I highly recommend it.
At the high end is the dowager of Amsterdam hotels, the Amstel. You might be able to get a good winter rate.
My wife and I stayed in the Hotel Nova this past November. We were able to get a great winter rate of 150 guilders ($80) which included a great breakfast. It's close to Dam Square so everything is within walking distance. Seems the further you get from the central station, the quieter and less seedy it gets, although it's always safe. The Nova is clean and friendly, if rather plain. Ask for one with a view of the street. See it at:
http://www.bookings.nl/hotels/nova.
Amsterdam is a great city. Have a good time!

Several years ago my husband and I stayed at what was then the Sonesta. I know it has since been bought by another chain - maybe someone out there knows what it is now. It was a spectacularly lovely hotel, large rooms, top restaurant, fairly close (walking distance) to the Dam.

Thanks for the info everyone. Seems the couple we are going with booked us into the Hotel Trianon - has anyone ever heard of it? It is next to the Concert Hall and near the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh museum and the Museum of Modern Art. Looked nice in the web. Anyway, we got a great rate for the weekend, flight included. Thanks again to all who responded...Molly
PS: Does this website seem *slower* to anyone lately?

I hope you are not planning to go to the Van Gogh museum. It is a beautiful museum, but unfortunately, it is closed for renovations. Much of the museum's collection was recently here in Washington, DC on exhibit. It has packed up and gone to California. I guess you'll just have to make another trip back to Amsterdam.
Molly, It has been a few years, but a friend engaged to an Amsterdamer suggested a small town outside of the city. I had a car, and so it made it easy to get to ABCOUDE. It was a quick and cheap ride on the train into the city and back and very easy. I avoided the noise of the city, it was cheaper, and the town itself was quite delightful for walks, with a few good restaurants as well.
