Amsterdam Hotel

Has anyone heard of Die Port Van Cleve in Amsterdam? We will be in Amsterdam next month for the weekend and the Canal House is all booked up. Any other suggestions for around $100 USD?

Thanks.

Never stayed in the Van Cleve.
Suggestions : 5-star:Hotel Pulitzer, made from a bunch of canal houses, quiet part of Prinsengracht
4-star:Hotel Doelen :quiet end of old town, near the fun, great view from breakfast room & from high up canal facing rooms.Does not resemble a rabbit warren inside, unlike most A'dam hotels.

Wehave been going to Amsterdam for the last few years and have found that a stay at Tulip Inn Dam Square is a good central location. Not far from train station. The price is usually around 100.00 per night. If you hear of other good locations, please post to your site. Janice Garrison

Hi Karen,
We stayed at Hotel De Gerstekorrel, Dam Straat in April 99. Great location 100m from Dam Square, clean and excellent breakfasts. Inexpensive too. We walked from Centraal Station having booked from VVV tourist information upon arrival in Amsterdam. We found it more than adeqate, however they do not have lifts- one drawback, but it didn't worry us.
Lindsay

The Ambassade has 52 roomms spread over ten fifteenth century houses, sumptous
antique furniture, two lavishly furnished tea rooms. On a quiet canalside street, two blocks from Dam Square, with 24 hr room service.

Alert: A delicious breakfast, about $12, is NOT included in the cost of the room. Bottled water is atrociously priced -- about five dollars a liter -- apfelpie a la mode from room service, at 9PM on a cold January night,is not. (Possibly the best I ever had).

A gem, appropriately enough, in the city of diamonds.

http://www.xs4all.nl/~ambassad/ambeng.html

You might consider the modest Best Western offering, the AMS Museum Hotel, which you can learn about at www.amsterdam-hotels.org/hotels-bin/museum. A VERY short walk to the fabulous Rijksmuseum. We took a taxi from the train station to the museum. I believe it had one of the tiniest bathrooms I've ever seen but we had an excellent location and price.

We stayed at the Port van Cleve hotel three years ago. At that time the building was undergoing major renovation (urgently required). Rooms were clean but very small.

We stayed at the Ambassade about 8 months ago, and thought it was terrible. We had a suite that faced the canal, and the noise made it impossible to sleep. At the time of booking the breakfast was included, and when we got there, they wanted to charge us. We got that settled, finally. Our only mistake was we should have checked out. Although there are people on this board that think highly of that hotel, it was not very nice for the price.

We've booked at Hotel Piet Hein for 2 nights in April after cancelling Hotel Vijaya as it was smack in the red light district...and we wanted to be assured of some sleep! - Does anyone know of Piet Hein - is it ok? Thanks
