AMSTERDAM HELP TONIGHT

My wie and I are looking to go to Amsterdam in early March but don't know if the time of year is worth the expense. We would need to buy our tickets tonight. Is this a very bad time of year to go? Thanks

I personally think that early March would be a great time to go. It's a bit before the masses arrive for the tulilps. I imagine it will still be quite cool, but we have vacationed in Amsterdam in the dead of winter for our past few trips and absolutely enjoyed it. Museums are always warm - and smaller crowds makes any city more enjoyable. I say go for it. We have tickets to A'dam on Christmas day and can't wait to get there!

We went to Amsterdam the last week of March, 2000. It was in the 40's, only got up to 50-51 degrees F. one day. We wore layers w/ thermal or 'cuddl-dud' underwear, and got Ajax knit caps for our heads. Thusly garbed, we proceeded to greatly enjoy ourselves, much walking, riding tram, museums, Anne Frank house, cinemas, coffee shops, etc. It was worth the price for off-season, even tho chilly. We took a 1/2 day trip to Keukenhof gardens, which were about 1/3 in bloom and absolutely gorgeous even then. The fields had not bloomed w/ tulips as yet, but there were other flowers. The flowers may not be the highpoint of early March trip, but so much else to do...

I'm sure you will have a great trip, Jonathan. Please let me know if you have any specific questions. This will be our 4th trip to Amsterdam. It's a wonderful city - beautiful bridges and canals, great museums, easy and inexpensive public transportation, cozy hotels, great food (definitely have an Indonesian rice table and vlamsee frites with mayo). We were there last in February. My most vivid memory of the trip is taking an afternoon off - lounging in our room underneath a duvet watching it snow over the canal. Hope you have a great trip!

I've been to Amsterdam twice in March and seen weather from 55 degrees F to 35 degrees and raining with a 20 MPH wind. Brrrrr. I wear up to four layers, cotton t shirt, long sleeved wool shirt, very light down jacket, and a weather proof insulated hooded parka. March is one of the windiest/rainiest months of the year but April is the opposite so there's a big difference between early March and late March. see http://www.cwi.nl/~steven/amsterdam.html<BR>for a chart of the last 20 years rain and temp. A weather site that has wind chill for the upcoming/current weather is much more useful than one that only has temperature.
