Amsterdam Coffeeshops...

Can anyone suggest good coffeeshops in Amsterdam, there are so many.

Preferably ones that have good prices and don't make you feel like an American tourist who has no idea what is going on (in other words they are helpful)

For some reason, that just brought up a general index. Try this:

We liked bluebird--very informative and friendly. We got brownies to go and ate them in our room or otherwise we might not have made it back to our room!

Have fun!

Dampkring is a popular one that just about everyone visits, but they're very good at not making you feel like a dumb tourist. Plus it's very friendly and the staff is great.

Border Line on RembrandtPlein (sp??) used to be good. They had their own version of Amsterdam Spice Cake. You can get it wrapped in alum.foil to munch walking all day.

Border Line gave coupons which will turn out to products when you have enough.

I like the Bulldog, but it is really touristy. Try some of the other suggesions above, I think, for a great experience...!

BARNEYS. It's the best one here. The are very patient and willing to answer any questions! They also serve pretty good food. I promise you won't be disappointed.

So Katie, are you sure the food is REALLY good?

Thanks for all the tips, folks.

The Rookies, Leidseplein area was a nice normal tavern kind of environment with a helpful "bartender".

I'm not sure if it's still in business but if so, make your way to the Milky Way, the MilchWeg (sp?).

Okay, it's not 100% coffeeshop but maybe it's more. There's a coffee shop. There's also a in-house dealer and sells munchies alongside to his wares.

There's a art studio, a bar (with two bands continuing playing), a film theater with oldie movies, a real theater and certainly more which I can't remember.

Go early in the evening and you don't have to go elsewhere for that evening. And it's fun!

Dampkring as mentioned above was used as a setting for a scene in Oceans Eleven. also know as a less commercial and more local shop - dropped out of the annual Cannabis Cup a few years back to protest the plastic nature of High Times Magazine's annual contest of coffeeshops to see who has the best bud.
