Amsterdam - clubs w/ blues, jazz..
I'm interested in spending an hour or two in a local bar/club that features some listenin' music, ie. blues/jazz...
Bourbon Street Jazz & Blues Club
Jazz Cafe Alto
Waterhole
I've surfaced these in the Leidseplein area (close to hotel), and would like to know if you have knowledge about them..
- difficult or easy to obtain entrance
- what time do things usually start 'happening'
- is there usually a door/cover charge, or do they make it up on drinks
- is there usually a drink minimum?

Time Out Amsterdam is an indispensible tool for nightlife of all kinds - clubbing, music, bars etc etc. It's definitely worth the $19 or whatever it's gone up to these days. A lot of the info might be on their website too.
Lonely Planet and Cool Guide to Amsterdam also do good club and music listings.

The Bim Huis is an internationally renown Jazz den - lovingly situated on a canal near the redlight district - but these are for concerts not the type of jazz experience you seem to indicate. Once in Amsterdam pick up a copy of the free Uit Krant (sp?) that lists hundreds of musical venues and offerings for each day. Things typically start late in Amsterdam and last late. And some places can be incredibly smokey - not just tobacco but cannabis smoke as well.
