Nighlife in Amsterdam?

Just wondering how the nightlife in Amsterdam is like? Is it really wild?

All major cities have nightlife that is realy wild. It's simply a matter of how much money you have to spend, who you know, and how many risks you want to take.

What, specifically are you looking for?

Hi d,

Ever since the Dutch rejected the EU constitution, they have decided to go to bed early.

Amsterdam shuts down at about 8:30 PM.

What do you consider wild and vibrant? A google on Amsterdam+nightlife turns up a whole raft of sites offering guides. That might give some ideas.

If you want to, you can visit Amsterdam for days and not even realize there is any nightlife..

I'm actually not looking for anything too crazy...but I'm travelling with a few other students and we booked a hostel in the Red Light District which I'm starting to feel a little weird and nervous about...is basically most of the nightlife around there?

I'd say most of the prostitutes and their customers are around there... but Amsterdam has more going for it than that, and in various locations throughout the city.

Have you tried looking at TimeOut Amsterdam?

Don't worry too much about the fact of being near the Red Light District, though you will need to use your common sense about potential pickpockets and, between around 9pm or so to the early hours of the morning, young male visitors with too much drink on board (I'm assuming you're female?). Even then, if you keep your head up and look as though you know what you're doing, you're unlikely to be hassled.

The nightlife around there is the kind of nightlife you should expect to be round there, i.e., anything that isn't a bar or restaurant you can see into from the street might be part of the sex-related industry, or a cheesy rip-off, or most likely both.

You should definitely read some guidebooks and follow up the links suggested here. There are less louche entertainment districts around the Rembrandtplein and Leidseplein, and pleasant and comfortable cafés and bars everywhere.

What is commonly called the Red Light District is an odd mixture - it isn't relentless wall-to-wall ladies-in-windows and shops with strange or ludicrous rubber items in the window, but some of that and some respectable shops (the Queen's tea and coffee merchant, for example), cafés, restaurants, bars and so on.
