AmEx International CellPhone offer

Has anyone rented a cell phone from AmEx's offer? It looks like the company that rents the cell phone is WorldRoam.

The rate I got is:
$2.99/day phone rental
$1.99/minute within Europe
$2.99/minute to US

Any Comments?

Hi yk,

If you will be gone more than 16 days, I suggest that you buy the $49 phone from www.mobalrental.com.

ira-

I'm only going for 7 days.
BTW, I forgot to mention, they charge $25 for phone delivery (on top of the fees I listed above).

OOPS,

That offer is good only if you have an AA advantage card, which costs $85/year.

The AAdvantage blank on the order form refers to your FF account, which is free. I bought a phone from Mobal the other day, and I don't have an AA $85 credit card.

Hello,
Robespierre, I followed your link to the website and mobalrental is giving away old phones for free($10 shipping). So for $10 you have a phone that will work in Europe and all you need to do is pay for your calls...sounds too good to be true...Has anyone tried their free phones?

I got the Mobal cell phone last week. I entered my AAdvantage number, but just to get 800 miles credited to my account. I'm pretty sure that it was not required -- just a bonus. As Robespierre says, membership in the AA program is free.

By the way, those Amex per minute rates are REALLY high...even higher than the Mobal rates, although with a US rather than UK phone # I would guess.

yk - Why don't you rent it from me? I can make a good profit for myself charging half that rate!

So, this free Mobal phone. Does it only work in Europe? Can one of these SIM dohickeys be purchased in Europe which would unlock it in the USA? Can one of these SIM things be purchased, or can a secret code be entered, that would enable its use with a cheaper phone company? (Respond in basics; I can't even spell SIM, much less understand it)

Hi tomboy,

European cell phones ooperate on different frequencies from US cell phones.

You cannot use the Mobal European phone in the US. You cannot use a US phone in Europe.

But there are some phones that have 3 or 4 "bands," which work in both places, assuming they're set up to do that.

The free Nokia 5110 from Mobal will work in any country that uses GSM 900. That covers a large part of the world, not just Europe. However it will not work in the US.

Others here have reported that the phones they purchased from Mobal came unlocked, contrary to what it states on their website. I have no way of verifying this but if it's true, then it's simply a matter of picking up a SIM card in whatever country you visit. In either case, I believe Nokia's are pretty easy to unlock anyway.

If you use the included Mobal SIM, you'll be paying their per minute roaming rates which are listed on their website. They're quite high even more than most US cellular providers' roaming charges.

I have a couple of unlocked dual/tri band phones lying around. Maybe I should start renting them out too
