I vacation in Paris quite often, but for the life of me, can't remember what time the American Express office closes on Saturdays. Does anyone out there remember? Unfortunately, the money exchange place I used in the 6th for a couple of decades has closed due to ill health of the owner.I've found that the other exchange places in the 6th have awful rates. Why in the world are you exchanging money? It's much cheaper just to draw cash from your checking account via ATM - and them it doesn;t matter who's open when - and no need to trek all over the city.

Where are you from? Even third world countries now have bank accounts that let you withdraw money from ATMs all over the world.
It seems funny that you mention awful rates for exchanging money and they still want to do it. While Am Ex may be better than some other exchange places (I really don't know for sure), I can assure you that it is far worse than withdrawing money from an ATM.

I choose not to use ATMs and also not to use credit cards a lot. I guess once you have your identity partially stolen, one goes back to "Old School" ways...that worked just fine for decades. I guess I'm old school when it comes to that. Over the last three decades I've been taking 1-3 overseas vacations yearly and have absolutely no problem exchanging money. Have been doing it since I was a teen. American Express in Paris has excellent rates.And as for the person who asked where I come from...it's L.A. area.Sorry to have bothered you with what I thought was a simple question. Happy Travels!

Both are open for banking services Monday to Saturday from 9am to noon and from 2 to 5pm.

However, I have had my identity stolen. It cost the banks mucho money. Doesn't bother me.

You can save both time and money by using ATM machines.

Have you considered opening an account for travel only? Put enough in to fund your visit and you don't have to worry about having your account looted.

I'm sorry I offered unwanted information. I just misunderstood that you were concerned with not wasting money when you clearly said you were concerned with places that charge too much. Sorry, I didn't understand that you really DON'T mind wasting money, and sorry that our suggestions of how to avoid that waste didn't appeal to you. I don't care that you don't mind paying extra to exhange, I just misunderstood.

ATM's are the way to go. The money exchange at CDG always has a line and the ATM's next to it never do. I guess there are people who feel uncomfortable with the ATM. There are still people in the US who do not use a checkcard (ATM card). The last time I used the American Express in Paris was in 1966 and that does date me.

Thanks Ira for the hours of the Amex office. I've done business there for decades, but always forget the Saturday hours. Plus the hours change. As to Patrick...It's not about not caring about wasting money it's about what I feel more comfortable doing. As for opening an account just for travel, well, unless one has his/her paycheck deposited directly into one's acoount monthly, which entitles one to no monthly fees,I have that type of account, then monthly bank fees are high.As far as here at home, I have an ATM card for emergencies.I am fine with my system. I opened a free checking account at Compass Bank and fund it solely for atm withdrawals while traveling.
Free accounts are out there (especially if you are over 50).
Just fyi, not a 'nag'.
