We decided on le Manoir les Minimes, partly because we rented a car for the first time, and this hotel doesn't require driving through town. Of course, now having been there, it wouldn't have been a huge problem to drive into the town but we did like the ease of entry /exit from the D-road right into the courtyard.

Not in AMboise but quite close by is a lovely country house hotel with an excellent restaurant. It is set in the countryside in beautiful grounds . http://www.domainehautsloire.com/
We've always enjoyed staying there and it is very central for visiting the chateaux

I wasn't second-guessing your choice of Le Clos d'Amboise. It looks very nice and gets good reviews on Tripadvisor.

Hi, we stayed at Le Clos d'Amboise in October 2007. All 4 of us (me, my husband, and my parents) liked it. Here's my review (scroll down a little):
