Any chance you could fly home from Naples? Open jaw plane tickets are usually about the same price as round-trip and save the time and cost to backtrack. Click on the multi-city option on airline websites to get open jaw prices.

We looked at flying back from Naples but weren't able to find a viable flight connection. The layovers were extremely long. We opted for a direct flight both ways in and out of Rome instead.

If you can aggregate all your stay in Rome at the end, you can get more time in Rome at little less expense without taking away little from the AC.
I don't know what time your flight arrives in Rome. If for example, you are arriving around 9am on Transat in Rome, when you head to Rome, you may or may not be able to check-in, so would leave luggage at hotel and kill time or start visiting Rome.
If you head directly to AC, you will eliminate one full check-in/out cycle from Rome, several hours saved as well as one trip to/from your Rome hotel. You would be in Capri by late-afternoon at which time you can check-in.
What this did was:
1. Turned waiting for your Rome hotel to be ready into travel to Capri, thereby eliminating that portion of the trip that would have consumed half day two days later.
2. Aggregated 2+1 nights in Rome into 3 nights. 2+1 nights would have yielded 1.5 useful day in Rome while 3 continuous nights yields 2 full days. Same number of nights, more time to visit.
This is one time you can actually create something of value at lower cost without sacrificing a lot of something else.

I like greg's idea a lot, with the caveat that I'm not sure how often weather interferes with ferries from Naples to Capri at that time of year -- early May, right? Maybe they run every day -- I honestly don't know and trust that those who do will chime in.

Consolidating time in Rome at the end of your stay was also my intention in going straight to the coast on arrival. It makes sense to not split your time. I thought direct to Sorrento as I thought you wanted to visit Pompeii but Capri would work as well if you are happy to miss Pompeii. I'm pretty sure the ferries will run from Capri to Amalfi but check the timetables to be double sure.

What's the best way to get directly down to Amalfi from Rome Airport? It looked like we had to go into Rome anyway before heading down to Amalfi which is why we decided to stay there a couple days to start off.
