My husband and I are planning a trip to The Amalfi Coast for the first time. We think we would like to visit Positano, Capri and Sorrento but we are open to suggestions. I would very much appreciate recommendations for hotels in these areas. Preferably with great views of the water and not too remote. I found several I love but they are $1,000 a night. Would like to spend under $500 a night but want something nice. In Capri something on the beach would be nice. Thank You!

When will you be traveling? How long will you be staying?

We would like to go in mid June. I know - we need to book right away. Probably going for ten days.

We really enjoyed our stay at Hotel Mediterraneo in Sorrento. We had a room with a beautiful view of the Bay of Naples, it was a thrill every morning to open the shutters and see that.

I booked through their own website and paid in advance for a discount. We had the sea view room without the balcony, the room was clean and quite spacious. Staff was friendly and helpful, breakfast included and served on their top floor dining room with amazing views.
There is a pool with a cafe adjacent to it, also in season a bathing platform at sea-level you access with an elevator.

Not sure about rates but we have stayed at the Grand Excelsior Vittoria in May a couple of times and the rates weren't bad. for the hotel, setting and services - all of which are fantasatic. It's set in a large private garden with pool although the grounds open to the main piazza. The hotel faces the Bay of Naples with large terrace for common use and many rooms with balconies or view over the bay.

And it 's right above the dock from which all of the ferries and hydrofoils leave.

If you are planning on visiting Positano, why not stay there? You can easily visit Capri from Positano via ferry.

Residence Alcione gets great reviews in Positano, as does Donna Rosa.

And Hotel Poseidon is fantastic.

Villa Scarpariello

We stayed there on our honeymoon in 2011, and it was absolutely wonderful. Just east of the town of Amalfi, between that and Atrani. Walkable into Amalfi for dinner, gelato, etc.

We toured ekscrunchy's hotel, Convento di Amalfi several years ago as it was being finished and it was lovely. You take the funicular up the mountain to reach it and the views were panoramic. I don't know about the service, as we didn't stay there, but the architecture was impressive, trying to keep some of the feeling of the old convent.

Hi, Packed: That convento project had been planned for years. The convent dated from the 12th Century, and sits high on the cliffsideide overlooking the sea. It looks not all that different now then when it was a working convent.

I don't know why so many first-time visitors rule out Amalfi as a place to stay.

I recently researched hotels for a hoped for trip to this area in June (real life subsequently intervened). I'd settled on Sorrento-Amalfi-Naples-Rome as my itinerary and on the Marina Riviera as my hotel in Amalfi,http://www.marinariviera.it. The rate that I was quoted for a deluxe double with a lovely view of the sea and the town of Amalfi was €1580, the rate per night varying from €320 to €420. I could feel the warmth and hospitality of the hotel staff even in my brief interactions around the reservation.

Thanks for the link, ekscrunchy. I agree that Amalfi gets a bad rap as a place that's so filled with tourists. While it often is filled with tourists, if you stay a little out of the thick of things, you have the advantage of a lively town, good restaurants, options for transportation, any maybe most importantiy, great gelato shops!

Sorrento is not of course on the AC, whereas Positano, Amalfi etc. are.

My choice would usually be the Palazzo Murat in Positano, although you have left it far too late to get in now and that may be true of most of the decent hotels along the coast.

I would always choose Positano over Amalfi or Sorrento. I think it's the prettiest and has the most dramatic views of the Amalfi Coast towns. I have stayed at Hotel Poseidon many times ( most recently last June) and have toured Residence Alcione. Either of those would be nice, but I doubt you'll find availability.

Whatever you do, decide ASAP. Many hotels along the AC and Sorrento/Naples, get booked months to a year ahead.
